Titans Lose, 4-1, in Battle of Top-12 Ranked Teams

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The No. 11-ranked Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team had a four-game winning streak snapped in a 4-1 loss at No. 12-ranked Washington U. in St. Louis on Sept. 28.

The Titans are No. 11 and the Bears No. 12 in the NSCAA Division III national rankings this week while IWU checks in at No. 9 and Washington U. is No. 8 in the weekly D3soccer.com rankings. Both teams were ranked No. 2 in the NSCAA Central Region rankings.

The Titans, who are now 7-2-0 overall, scored first on a goal from 15 yards out by junior Emily Hinchman at 9:47 with assists to freshman Tess Bottorff and senior Molly O'Brien. It was Hinchman's sixth goal of the year.

Washington U. (9-1-0) did the rest of the scoring, all in a 13-minute span in the first half.

Alyssa Marulli opened the scoring at 13:52 on an assist from Lee Ann Felder to tie the match at 1-1 and less than a minute later, at 14:49, went ahead 2-1 when Lillie Toaspern hit a left-footed shot into the near corner of the net on an assist from Anna Zambricki.

At 22:19 the Bears' Lauren Steimle got her third goal of the year on an assist from Felder to make the score 3-1 and the last goal of the game came at 26:43 as Toaspern scored again on a loose ball in the box with an assist to Alyssa Marulli.

Washington U. outshot IWU, 27-8, and had 16 shots on goal compared to four for the Titans. Washington U. outshot Illinois Wesleyan, 19-4, in the first half, and had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.Washington U. had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks and were also called offsides 13 times in the victory.

IWU sophomore keeper Zoie Samaan made four saves in the first half, facing eight shots on goal, and sophomore Renata Butikas made six saves. Junior goalkeeper Clara Jaques picked up the win, making three saves.

The series between Illinois Wesleyan and Washington U. is now 5-5-4 and 12 of the 14 matches have been decided by one goal or fewer with the last two (IWU 3-1 in 2010 and Washington U. 4-1 in 2011) being the only exceptions.

Illinois Wesleyan is idle until October 8 when it resumes College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play at North Central. The originally scheduled match this weekend (October 2) at Milwaukee School of Engineering was cancelled.
