ELMHURST, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan salvaged a split of a doubleheader with a 9-4 win in the nightcap after losing a 7-5 verdict in game one at Elmhurst on Saturday, April 30.
The split sent the Titans to 22-12 overall and 12-6 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Bluejays improved to 14-17 overall and 4-13 in the league.
In game one, IWU scored two in the third and one in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead but the Jays struck back with one in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. Illinois Wesleyan went ahead 5-4 in the seventh as sophomore
Kevin Callahan, who had four of IWU's 12 hits, led off with a homer. Freshman

Johnathan Erickson singled to send Czarnowski to third. Sophomore catcher

Joe Sweeney (5-3) was roughed up for 11 hits and seven runs (five earned) in 7 1/3 innings while striking out six and walking one.
In game two, the Titans had five runs in the second and three in the third to build up a big lead for starter
Nick Mehn, who improved to 5-1 as he went 7 1/3 innings and allowed 10 hits and four runs while striking out eight.
Nathan had four hits, Czarnowski and freshman centerfielder
Jon Frericks each had three and junior leftfielder
Mark McDermott had two as the Titans banged out 15 hits in the second game. Czarnowski had a solo homer to lead off the second inning and a run-producing single in the eighth.
The Titans are in action next against Rockford in a nonconference game at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at Horenberger Field, then play a three-game set against league-leading North Central next weekend.
