Pankau Earns Win, Save as Titans Take Two Over Carthage

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan senior righthander Jason Pankau allowed only one hit and struck out seven in a 2-0 shutout over Carthage in game one, then saved the 5-4 third game win as the Titans took two of three at Horenberger Field on Saturday, April 23.

The Titans are 19-10 overall and 11-4 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Red Men fell to 18-8 overall and are 10-5 in CCIW play.

The Titans scored twice in the third as sophomore first baseman Kevin Callahan led off with a walk and freshman Bobby Czarnowski followed with a single up the middle. Sophomore catcher A.J. Nathan sacrificed the runners to second and third. After a ground out to the pitcher, junior rightfielder Kevin Sullivan delivered a two-run single down the leftfield line.

Pankau improved to 4-1 with the win while Carthage's Mario Perez, who allowed only five hits, fell to 2-2.

In game two, Illinois Wesleyan managed two singles - onein the fourth from Callahan and one in the seventh from Czarnowski - in losing a 4-0 game against Carthage's Danny Dahm, who improved to 2-0.

Junior Joe Sweeney (5-2) was the losing hurler, allowing 11 hits with three earned runs while striking out three and walking one.

In game three, Nick Mehn (4-1) was the winning pitcher as he went five innings and allowed four runs on five hits and struck out four. Pankau picked up his second save of the season as he went the final two innings, striking out two and allowing one hit.

The Titans trailed 4-2 going into the fifth. With two outs, Sullivan and sophomore shortstop Zach Scott singled and senior centerfielder Ryan Hopp walked to load the bases. McDermott singled to leftfield to bring home Sullivan and Grodecki walked to bring in Scott and tie the game at 4-4.

Red Men freshman lefthanded relief pitcher Andrew Arenson came in the game and uncorked a wild pitch that scored Hopp as the Titans took a 5-4 lead.

Illinois Wesleyan plays a nonconference game at Division I Illinois State in the annual Horenberger/Bass Classic at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26.
