IWU Baseball Splits Sunday CCIW Games at North Park

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team defeated North Park, 13-7, in the first game of two College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin contests on Sunday, April 17 in Chicago before losing a 12-9 decision in the nightcap.

The Titans, who won two of three in the weekend series, are 17-8 overall and 9-3 in the CCIW while the Vikings are 8-4 in the league and 21-7 this season.

Sophomore shortstop Zach Scott tied an IWU game record with three home runs in the first contest. Others who have hit three homers in a game were James Rinne (vs. Elmhurst in 1997) and George Stiglish (vs. Gustavus Adolphus in 1998). Scott finished with four hits and six runs batted in.

Sophomore first baseman Kevin Callahan had two round trippers of his own as the Titans banged out
13 hits and scored four times in the fourth and five times in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Lefthander Nick Mehn (3-1) went the first five innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits, to get the win on the mound and senior Jason Pankau picked up his first save of the season and second of his career as he tossed the final four hitless innings,walking two and striking out two.

In the second game, IWU banged out 15 hits and had a 7-5 lead after scoring three in the top of the seventh. But the Vikings scored five in the last of the seventh to take a 10-7 advantage and added two more in the bottom of the eighth.

Freshman second baseman Jonathan Erickson had four hits with a double in game two while senior centerfielder Ryan Hopp, junior leftfielder Mark McDermott, Callahan and Scott each had two hits.

Junior lefthander Pat Hayn was the starting pitcher and lasted four innings, allowing six hits and five runs, and sophomore righthander Anthony Kopp was the losing pitcher in relief as he wewnt 2 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on five hits while striking out one.

The Titans play a 3 p.m. nonconference single game at Monmouth on Wednesday, April 20.
