Titan Women Breeze Past Augustana, 71-39

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team will head into the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament on a high note after a 71-39 win over Augustana in Bloomington on Feb. 22.

The No. 7-ranked Titans improved to 21-4 and finish 13-1 in the CCIW and the Vikings dropped to 7-18 and 3-11 in conference play.

Augustana did not score a 2-point basket in the entire first half and hit their first one with 18:14 to go in the game.

Illinois Wesleyan will host Carthage at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25 in the semifinals of the CCIW tournament, following the first game between No. 2 seed Wheaton and No. 3 Millikin at 5 p.m.
The tournament championship will be at the Shirk Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, with the winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

In the Titans' win on Tuesday, IWU trailed 6-4 with 15:36 to play in the first half before going on a 16-0 run during the next 8 ½ minutes to take a 20-6 lead before Augustana scored again with 7:01 left before intermission. IWU had a 34-13 lead at halftime and limited the Vikings to .130 shooting (3 of 23) in the period.

Sophomore Melissa Gardner scored 17 points to lead IWU and junior Olivia Lett contributed 12.

Augustana outrebounded the Titans by a 46-35 total but the Vikings were guilty of 23 turnovers compared to 12 by Illinois Wesleyan.

The Vikings were led by the 18 points of Molly Etheridge while Kristen Fox added 10 points. Elizabeth Phillips had a game-high 10 rebounds.

Illinois Wesleyan made 24 of 57 from the field (42.1 percent) and connected on eight of 20 3-point free tries (40.0 percent) while making 15 of 19 free throws (78.9 percent).

The Vikings shot 24.0 percent (19 of 59) from the field and made seven of 23 (30.4 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc. Augustana made only eight of 22 free throws (36.4 percent).
