Titans Meet Carroll in NCAA Soccer First Round

Illinois Wesleyan 2009 NCAA Women's Soccer First Round Game Notes

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - For the second straight year and the third time ever, the Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team will play in the NCAA Division III championships. The Titans play Carroll (Wis.) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 14 in a first round game hosted at Francis Field at Washington U. in St. Louis.

Washington U. (14-3-1) plays Webster (15-3-1) at 11 a.m. in the other first round game at the site. The winners of Saturday's games will meet on Sunday at 1 p.m., for a berth into the sectional semifinals. Ticket prices are $6 for adults and $3 for students. The game will be broadcast locally on WESN-FM 88.1 and on the Internet at www.wesn.org/881/.


The Titans are 15-3-3 overall and are in the tournament by way of a "Pool C" berth after falling in the championship match of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament at Augustana, 1-0.

Carroll (17-2-1) received an automatic bid as the champions of the Midwest Conference tournament. The Pioneers are led by 25-goal scorer Cody Callendar while Kendell Uttech and Amanda Leach have 11 and 10 goals each, respectively. Keeper Ashlee Reinke has a 0.60 goals-against average. Carroll is making its third consecutive and fourth overall NCAA appearance and enter the NCAA tournament having won 13 of their last 14 games.

Common opponents for the two teams are (with results):
• Carthage (Carroll won 2-1 in overtime; IWU won 1-0)
• Wis-Whitewater (Carroll lost 4-1; IWU won 1-0)
• Augustana (Carroll won 2-1; IWU lost twice by scores of 1-0 both times)
• Monmouth (Carroll won 6-0, IWU won 3-0).

No. 8 Washington University earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the University Athletic Association (UAA) for the fourth-straight year. The Bears posted an overall record of 14-3-1, including a 5-1-1 mark in UAA play.

Webster (15-3-1) earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship after winning the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) tournament with a 5-4 victory in penalty kicks over top-seeded Principia College. The trip to the NCAA Tournament for the Gorloks will be the eighth in the 11-year history of the program.


In the 2008 NCAA Division III tournament first round, Illinois Wesleyan tied Rhodes but advanced in a 4-3 shootout advantage. In the second round IWU tied Washington U. and were outscored, 3-1, in penalty kicks.

In the 2005 NCAA tournament, the Titans lost a 1-0 first round decision at Loras.
