Men’s Lacrosse Handles Foresters on Road

Titans down Lake Forest, 14-7

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team took care of business on the road, as the Titans doubled up Lake Forest College 14-7 Saturday, March 7. With the win, IWU improves to 4-2, while the Foresters fall to 2-3.

Hat tricks by junior Nate Pound (Theinsville, Wis.-Homestead) and freshman Holden Webster (Centennial, Colo.-Arapahoe) headlined an IWU attack that saw eight individuals find the back of the net. Pound posted a career-high five points on the day as he added a pair of assists. Sophomore Charlie Burghardt (Milwaukee, Wis.-Brookfield Central) was the top facilitator for the Titans, finishing with three assists. Juniors Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) and Jake Kahoun (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) chipped in two goals apiece, while Timothy McHugh was also credited with an assist.

Sophomore Nick Donohue (Glenview, Ill.-Glenbrook South) powered the defense with team-highs of seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. Senior Kaden Gammelgaard (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich), who also scored the ninth goal of his career in the win, forced two miscues as did senior Billy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel).

Illinois Wesleyan won 15-of-25 faceoffs overall, with senior Michael Rocco (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) and sophomore Matt Arnold (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) sharing duties at the X. Rocco went 8-for-13 with three scoops, with Arnold right behind him at 7-for-12 with one ground ball.

Sophomore Jaymeson Zackery (Saint Paul, Minn.-Eastview) made eight saves in a full game of work in goal as he registered his fourth win of the year.

A goal by sophomore Jeremy Langosch (Grayslake, Ill.-Warren Township) got the Green and White on the scoreboard first, 11:11 in the first period of play. IWU quickly extended its lead to two, as Rocco won the ensuing faceoff, and Burghardt found sophomore Dylan Walker (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) for his first career goal. The score gave the visitors a quick 2-0 lead, as the time stood at 10:40.

Kahound and Pound followed with goals 13 seconds apart to extend the margin, 4-0, with 8:08 to go in the first.

Lake Forest scored once before the end of the period, but Timothy McHugh led a two-goal run to start the second. After scoring a goal himself, he dished to Webster for a 6-1 IWU advantage.

The Foresters found some momentum on the ensuing faceoff, using a win at the X to spark a three-goal run. LFC scored its first of the run eight seconds after the restart before taking on two more to cut IWU's lead to two, 6-4, at halftime.

Illinois Wesleyan wasted little time out of the intermission, riding the momentum of Zach Iannucci's halftime speech to a three-goal run. Kahoun struck first after Rocco forced a quick turnover and scooped up a ground ball. An initial shot by Billy McHugh was stopped, but Kahoun capitalized on the rebound. Rocco kept possession with the Green and White with a win at the X and Pound hit Gammelgaard for an 8-4 lead.

Pound completed the run with an assist to freshman Garrett Wills (Sugar Grove, Ill.-Kaneland) following a timely pickup by sophomore Wyatt Hart (Littleton, Colo.-Valor Christian) on the defensive end. The goal, Wills' third of the year, pushed IWU ahead, 9-4, just one and a half minutes into the third quarter.

LFC scored three of the next five goals to battle back within four, 11-7, with less than nine minutes to play. The home team's momentum stalled there however, as Zackery denied a shot by Lake Forest's Liam Smith and sent the ball down field for a successful clear. The defensive play resulted in a goal by Webster before Pound and Timothy McHugh scored to close out the victory.

Illinois Wesleyan puts its three-game win streak on the line Wednesday night, March 11, in a battle with Baldwin Wallace University at Tucci Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m. under the lights.
