Men’s Lacrosse Wins Fourth Straight, Edges Baldwin Wallace

McHugh powers offense with eight points

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A run of eight unanswered goals spanning the second and third quarters propelled the Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team to its fourth straight win Wednesday night, March 11. The Titans (5-2) edged out Baldwin Wallace University, 15-11, as the Yellowjackets spiraled to 4-3.

Junior Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) put together an electric performance, popping off for a game-high eight points. He scored a team-high five goals on the night, tying his career-best, while dishing out three assists. Junior Jake Kahoun (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) followed with a hat trick and a helper, while sophomore Charlie Burghardt (Milwaukee, Wis.-Brookfield Central) tacked on two goals and two assists. Freshman Holden Webster (Centennial, Colo.-Arapahoe) tallied three scores, with freshman Garrett Wills (Sugar Grove, Ill.-Kaneland) rounding out the points with two goals.

Nine different Titans notched a caused turnover as sophomore Jaymeson Zackery (Saint Paul, Minn.-Eastview) led the defensive effort. Zackery finished with a team-high five ground balls alongside a career-high 19 saves in between the pipes.

Illinois Wesleyan struck first, but Baldwin Wallace used a three-goal run to climb ahead, 4-3, after the opening quarter.

Opening the second period, Zackery came through with a save to set up the Titans in transition. Following a good clear, Webster ripped a shot to tie the game at four. Senior Michael Rocco (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) won the ensuing faceoff to keep momentum in favor of the Green and White offense. Senior Cole Kennedy (Walnut Creek, Calif.-De La Salle) found Burghardt for a goal on the possession to give the home team a 5-4 lead with 13:17 remaining in the first half.

Once again, Baldwin Wallace responded, as two straight goals put the Yellow Jackets up 6-5 with just over 12 minutes on the clock.

The Titans blocked a shot, and senior Karsten Nordlie (Roscoe, Ill.-Hononegah Community) scooped up the ground ball, calling for a timeout by head coach Zach Iannucci to set up the IWU offense. The break in the action proved to be used properly, as McHugh completed a first-half hat trick to tie the game at six with 11:06 remaining. The following faceoff was awarded to the Titans on a violation, and Burghardt made BWU pay with a goal, as IWU went up 7-6 with 10:31 left to go in the half. McHugh found Kahoun for a goal to up the lead to two, 8-6, with just over eight minutes left in the second period.

Illinois Wesleyan would score three more unanswered goals, including a last-second score by Wills, to take an 11-6 advantage into halftime.

A goal by freshman Jake Guerard (Arlington Heights, Ill.-John Hersey) doubled the score, as the Titans held a 12-6 lead with 9:58 to play in the third period. Kahoun found the back of the net for his second goal of the night, making it 13-6. BWU ended the Illinois Wesleyan scoring run with a goal to end the third period, 13-7.

The visitors rattled off two goals to begin the final period, trimming IWU's lead to four, 13-9.

Webster caused a turnover, and McHugh scored his fifth goal of the game to end the scoring drought for IWU, making it 14-9 with 5:13 left to play.

Back-to-back goals by Baldwin Wallace kept the visitors in the race, but Burghardt found Kahoun for the dagger, as the Titans took the game, 15-11.

IWU embarks on a three-game road stretch, beginning with its spring break trip. The Titans will travel to Roanoke College and Pfeiffer University. IWU faces Roanoke Saturday, March 14, at 1 p.m. ET, before taking on Pfeiffer Tuesday, March 17, at 1 p.m. ET.
