Men’s Lacrosse Soars Past Eagles

Nine Titans score goals in 15-3 win

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team pitched a second-half shutout in a 15-3 win over Benedictine University Thursday night, March 5, at Tucci Stadium. The Titans moved to 3-2 with the win, while the Eagles came away with their first loss of the season (3-1).

Junior Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) powered the offense with four assists alongside a goal for a game-high five points. Senior Cole Kennedy (Walnut Creek, Calif.-De La Dalle) and freshmen Holden Webster (Centennial, Colo.-Arapahoe), and Garrett Wills (Sugar Grove, Ill.-Kaneland) tacked on four points apiece. Kennedy and Wills put up two goals and a pair of assists, while Webster tied sophomore Jeremy Langosch (Grayslake, Ill.-Warren Township) for the team lead with three goals. Webster was also credited with an assist.

Defensively, the Green and White caused 22 turnovers. Freshman Tyce Baldwin (Aurora, Colo.-Grandview) led the way with five. He added five ground balls, tying senior Karsten Nordlie (Roscoe, Ill.-Hononegah Community) for the team-high. Senior Billy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) recorded four caused turnovers and three scoops. IWU utilized the services of sophomore Jaymeson Zackery (Saint Paul, Minn.-Eastview) and senior Sam Scott (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) in between the pipes. Zackery posted three saves and Scott added four.

Illinois Wesleyan was strong at the X behind the play of senior Michael Rocco (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) and sophomore Matt Arnold (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect). Rocco went 7-for-13 on the night, while Arnold won 6-of-7 faceoffs.

The Green and White never trailed in the contest as the home team scored the first three goals of the night. After Timothy McHugh assisted on Wills' first goal to open the scoring, Billy McHugh made a clutch play down the field to garner a man-up opportunity for the Titans. With Benedictine down due to an offsides penalty, Timothy McHugh fed Webster for a goal to double the lead, 2-0, with 6:09 left in the first quarter.

Webster struck again, just over a minute later, off an assist from Wills before the Eagles found the back of the net off the ensuing faceoff.

Leading 3-1 after 15 minutes, Illinois Wesleyan ripped off the next six goals to climb ahead comfortably, 9-1. The second-quarter featured goals by freshman Jake Guerard (Arlington Heights, Ill.-John Hersey), Webster, Kennedy, junior Nate Pound (Theinsville, Wis.-Homestead), and two from Langosch.

Benedictine scored at the 5:10 and 1:47 marks to cut IWU's lead to six, 9-3, at the intermission, but the Green and White scored six unanswered to roll to a 15-3 win.

Illinois Wesleyan travels to Lake Forest College Saturday, March 7. Action is set for 1 p.m. at Farwell Field.
