Titans Drop Two in Tennessee

Flag Football return to midwest Sunday

LEBANON, Tenn.- The Illinois Wesleyan University flag football team dropped both of its games in Lebanon, Tenn. Tuesday, March 17. IWU (3-2) fell to Cumberland University (37-0) and Milligan University (82-6).

Illinois Wesleyan 0 Cumberland 37

In the opener against Cumberland (5-5), neither team scored on the first two drives. An IWU interception led to the first Phoenix score of the day, making it 6-0 late in the first quarter. The IWU defense forced a turnover on downs to start the second quarter, but failed to score on the next drive.

On the following Cumberland sequence, a sack with 4:15 left in the half by freshman Deanna Cirebea (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) setup fourth and long. The ensuing punt pinned the Titans at their own one-yard line. After a three-and-out, Cumberland ran the Illinois Wesleyan punt back to increase the lead to 12-0 with 1:37 until halftime.

Another Cumberland stop gave them favorable field position at the IWU 30-yard line, which set up another quick score with 20 seconds left, putting the Phoenix up 18-0 at halftime. The Titans got in the red zone twice in the second half, but failed to score, dropping the opener, 37-0.

Freshman Maylin Nunez (Chicago, Ill.-Taft) completed four passes for 55 yards. She also ran for 20 yards on three attempts. Freshman Lily Greenfield (Lindenhurst, Ill.-Lakes Community) caught five passes for 25 yards. Defensively, freshman Natalyia Stallings (Rockford, Ill.-Guilford) had 12 flag pulls while Cirebea had two sacks.

Game Two Illinois Wesleyan 6 Milligan 82

Against the Buffs (11-0), Milligan raced out to a 43-0 lead in the second quarter. IWU got its lone score of the game on an eight-yard strike from Nunez to Stallings with six minutes left in the first half. Milligan outpaced the Titans the rest of the way.

Nunez completed 24 passes for 183 yards with one touchdown. Freshman Emma Caniglia (Addison, Ill.-Addison) caught seven passes for 58 yards. She also had seven flag pulls.

The Titans are back in action at Marian University, Sunday, March 22 for a doubleheader against the Sabres and University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. IWU will take on UWO at 12:30 p.m. and Marian at 2:30 p.m.
