Flag Football Splits Sunday Doubleheader

IWU blanks UW-Oshkosh, gets shutout by Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University flag football team split a two-game set at Marian University, Sunday, March, 22. IWU defeated the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 53-0, and fell 12-0 to Marian University. IWU sits at 4-3, while Marian improved to 3-1. Oshkosh drops to 0-3.

Defense reigned supreme in the opening quarter with the first score of the game coming on a pick-six from freshman Aishah Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Guilford) with 4:26 left in the first quarter. Freshman Emma Caniglia (Addison, Ill.-Addison) completed the two-point pass to fellow freshman Maylin Nunez (Chicago, Ill.-Taft), putting IWU up 8-0. 

A little over a minute later, on the next UWO possession, the Green and White booked its second pick-six of the day, this time from freshman Zoey Vasquez (Independence, Mo.-William Chrisman). Caniglia fed freshman Lily Greenfield (Lindenhurst, Ill.-Lakes Community) with a short pass over the middle to complete the two-point attempt, growing the advantage to 16-0.

Illinois Wesleyan got its first offensive score with 1:18 left in the opening quarter on a 20-yard pass from Caniglia to Smith, a successful one-point point after increased the lead to 23-0.

The next score did not come until the 5:39 mark of the second quarter, when Caniglia lobbed it to Nunez for her second score of the day, making it 29-0.

IWU got a stop to begin the second half. On the next Illinois Wesleyan drive, Caniglia zig-zagged in for a 40-yard rushing score with 7:15 remaining in the third quarter. IWU led 41-0 At the end of the third and never looked back, piling on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, resulting in their second shutout of the season. 

Caniglia led the way with 14 completions for 84 yards, with three passing touchdowns. She also rushed for a season and career-high 119 yards with two rushing scores, making her the program's first single game 100-yard rusher. Greenfield had five receptions for 25 yards with one receiving touchdown. Smith added on two receiving scores. Defensively, freshman Natalyia Stallings (Rockford, Ill.-Guilford) had five flag pulls. Freshman Keilyn Navarro (Glendale Heights, Ill.-Conant) led the way with two sacks. IWU had four interceptions, including two from Vasquez.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 0 Marian 12
After a scoreless first quarter, Marian struck first with 15 seconds left in the second quarter. The Titans got into the red zone twice in the second half, but turned over on downs both times. An IWU drive that bridged the third and fourth quarter stalled on the Marian six-yard line with seven minutes left, thwarting a comeback.

On the next drive, Marian marched it 76 yards to score their second touchdown of the day with just under two minutes left. 

In the air, Caniglia completed 16 attempts for 118 yards. Nunez led with six receptions for 59 yards. Freshman Nakilah Mason (Chicago, Ill.-Chicago Military Academy) had eight flag pulls along with two sacks. Smith tacked on one pick.

The Titans head back to Bloomington for the program's home opener, Saturday, March 28 in a triangular against Illinois College and Benedictine University. IWU takes the Tucci Stadium turf at 5 p.m.
