Caniglia throws for four touchdowns

CHICAGO - The Illinois Wesleyan University flag football team shutout North Park University, 27-0, Friday, March 13 at the Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago, Ill. The Titans move to a perfect 3-0 on the season.

North Park (0-3) began with the ball, but a tackle for a loss from freshman Keilyn Navarro (Glendale Heights, Ill.-Conant) forced a stop. 

On the first IWU drive, the NPU defense held strong, giving the Vikings the ball back, but the defensive tradeoff continued with a pass deflection by freshman Nakilah Mason (Chicago, Ill.-Chicago Military Academy) on fourth down, resulting in another NPU turnover. 

On the ensuing Illinois Wesleyan possession, a 14-yard run from freshman Emma Caniglia (Addison, Ill.-Addison) extended the drive with 6:22 left in the first quarter, but a failed fourth and goal conversion stalled the drive with 2:38 left in the opening frame.

North Park punted on the next drive, ending the first quarter 0-0. On the first play of the second quarter, Caniglia found freshman Lily Greenfield (Lindenhurst, Ill.-Lakes Community) for a 51-yard catch and run touchdown. Canigila ran in the one-point try to put IWU ahead 7-0. Both defenses stood tall the rest of the half, giving IWU the ball back with two minutes left. A pass from Caniglia to freshman Natalyia Stallings (Rockford Ill.-Guilford) got them to midfield with 1:06 left in the half. The Titans had two shots at the endzone, but did not score, resulting in a 7-0 halftime score in favor of IWU.

Out of the half, following stops on each side, Caniglia threw a 36-yard strike to freshman Brielle Wierzbanowski (Tinley Park, Ill.-Victor J. Andrew), On the next play, Caniglia fired a 15-yard strike to freshman Maylin Nunez (Chicago, Ill.-Taft), making it 13-0. The two-point try from Caniglia to Stallings increased the Titan lead, 15-0. 

With five minutes left in the third quarter, Caniglia threw her third touchdown pass of the day on a cross-field pass to Greenfield from five yards out, growing the advantage to 21-0. 

With 10:50 left in the fourth, Caniglia found Stallings for an eight-yard score, extending the IWU lead to 27-0. The Green and White forced a punt on the next Vikings possession, giving the Titans the ball back from their own 15 yard line. 

IWU punted back to the Vikings with 3:13 left, but the Titans defense stood strong to preserve the shutout.

Caniglia threw for 173 yards and four touchdowns. She also rushed for 52 yards on seven attempts. Greenfield hauled in three receptions for 60 yards, with two touchdowns. Defensively, Mason had four sacks on the day.
The Titans are back in action Tuesday, March 17 in Tennessee for a doubleheader with Milligan University and Cumberland University. Action begins from Lebanon at 2 p.m.
