Women’s Lacrosse Races Past Augsburg

IWU starts 2-0 for first time since 2019

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team toppled Augsburg University, 20-10, at a blustery Tucci Stadium Sunday, Feb. 22. With the win, IWU is out to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2019 season, while the Auggies drop to 0-1.

Senior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) led the Titan attack for the second straight day, piling up a game-high 10 points with three goals and a career-high seven assists. IWU's season-high 20 goals came by way of two four-goal showings from sophomore Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) and senior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), alongside hat tricks from sophomores Sophie Shore (St. Peters, Mo.-Francis Howell Central) and Lillie Keeton (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington), and senior Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) also notching three apiece. Shore tacked on four helpers to accrue seven points.

Illinois Wesleyan racked up an 18-11 lead in draw controls, with Newton leading the way with a game-high eight. Shore added five draws and Riepe recorded three. Newton was also the team leader with eight ground balls, with Shore and Riepe following with four each. The trio also captained the caused turnover tally as IWU forced 19 turnovers. Shore forced a team-high five, while Riepe and Newton registered four apiece.

Goals by Shore and Gibson put the Titans in front early before Augsburg's Breya Sawyer scored with 7:59 on the clock in the first quarter.

Wasting no time responding, the Green and White used a winning draw to fly down onto attack. DiGiovanni put a pass into the stick of Keeton wrapping around the crease and the sophomore buried a shot past the AU goalie for a 3-1 lead. The strike was the first of four straight by IWU to close the first period.

Leading 6-1 after 15 minutes, Shore found Riepe for a goal just over two minutes into the second. One minute later, Shore fired a shot off a DiGiovanni assist to charge ahead, 8-1.

Augsburg scored back-to-back goals in a 12-second span to pull back within five, 8-3, but a three-run spurt that featured two goals from DiGiovanni and another from Newton pushed the Titans ahead, 11-3.

After Augsburg found the back of the net at the 2:02 mark, Illinois Wesleyan ripped off three goals in the closing 31 seconds of the half to stretch its cushion to double-digits.

The Augies scored the first three goals of the second half, but the Green and White attack continued to score in bunches to secure the double-digit victory.

The Titans continue their homestand to begin the season as they host Aurora University Wednesday, Feb. 25. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Tucci Stadium.
