ELMHURST, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team grabbed its first road win of the season Wednesday, Oct. 7 against Elmhurst University at Langhorst Field. With the help of goalscorers junior Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) and senior Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West), the Titans are 6-0-5 (2-0-1 CCIW), while the Bluejays fall to 8-4 (1-2 CCIW).
The Titans came out firing to start the contest. Seven minutes in, junior Taylor Haun (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) passed a deep ball to Lampert for an out-the-box goal to put the Titans on the board, 1-0.
The Green and White kept pushing Elmhurst with opportunities by Haun and junior Ellen Dahlquist (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame), but each were blocked by the Bluejays.
The Titans ended the first half with four shots compared to Elmhurst's two, with each having two on target.
The Bluejays took a more aggressive approach in the second half with an opportunity to equalize. However, IWU didn't let that stop them, as Haun took possession down the midfield, finding freshman Peyton McMahon (Lakewood, Ill.-Crystal Lake Central). McMahon passed to a finishing Wiley in the middle of EU territory to grow the lead to 2-nil in the 62nd minute.
Elmhurst cut the gap in half, 2-1 in the 72nd minute, but that's as close as it would get as the Titans hung on for the one score victory
The Green and White closed with five shots, three on target, while Elmhurst took 11 shots with seven on target. Senior Adriana Ruffolo (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Glenbard North) finished with six saves compared to Elmhurst's one.
The Titans continue on the road at North Park University on Saturday, Oct. 10. Game time is set for 1 p.m. with the men's match to follow at 4 p.m. Live coverage of the contest can be accessed here.
