Men’s Soccer Draws at Knox

Titans battle back for tie to remain unbeaten

GALESBURG, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team secured a draw at Knox College Saturday, Sept. 6. Trailing with less than 20 minutes to play, a late goal knotted the score at 2-2 as IWU ran its record to 2-0-1. Knox dipped to 0-0-2 with the draw.

The Green and White found the back of the net first, as sophomore Ben Lyons (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) buried a shot in the eighth minute. It marked his third goal of the season.

The Prairie Fire answered with strikes in the 23rd and 74th minutes to climb ahead, 2-1.

Pressing for the equalizer, senior Peter Basta (Bolingbrook, Ill.-Plainfield East) put a shot on frame, but it was stopped by the Knox goalkeeper. Illinois Wesleyan quickly turned a throw-in into a pair of free kicks, the second of which saw senior Cristian Schmidt (Wichita, Kan.-Northeast Magnet) blast a goal into the upper right.

The Titans tallied four shots over the final 10 minutes of play, but could not find the back of the net as the game ended even, 2-2.

Illinois Wesleyan travels to Blackburn College Wednesday, Sept. 10. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
