Titans Bounce Back with Win at Knox

IWU earns fifth win of the season

GALESBURG, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team picked up a 4-1 non-conference victory against Knox College Wednesday, Sept. 24. The Titans climb to 5-4-0 on the season, continuing to put up their highest win total since 2022, while the Prairie Fire fall to 3-4-1.

Illinois Wesleyan smothered Knox with a relentless offensive effort. The Green and White scored in the third, 23rd, 53rd, and 71st minutes while outshooting the Prairie Fire, 15-6. IWU put eight shots on target to KC's four alongside a 5-3 edge in corners.

A miscue on a goal kick by the Prairie Fire put the ball in the feet of senior Kayley Carew (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) near midfield in the third minute of the game. She quickly dished it off to sophomore Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South) who made a move around her defender 15 yards from the goal and booted one in to give the Titans an early 1-nil lead.

Twenty minutes later, Robinson doubled the Illinois Wesleyan advantage to secure the first multi-goal game of her career. Junior Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West) sent a cross into the box and found sophomore Ellen Dahlquist (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame). Dahlquist dumped it to Robinson on the goal line, who finished it off in the 23rd minute to extend the lead, 2-nil, with what proved to be the game-winner.

The Prairie Fire snuck a goal in before the end of the first period. Knox played a ball towards the top of the 18, where several Titans converged but were unable to clear it as the home team cut the IWU lead in half, 2-1.

Junior Ava Mapes (Golden, Colo.-Lakewood) took a free kick at midfield, booting it towards goal through the legs of two Knox defenders. The Prairie Fire were whistled for a foul in the midst of chaos at goal, resulting in a penalty kick for Carew. Capitalizing on the opportunity, Carew beat the keeper to up the advantage 3-1, less than 10 minutes into the second half.

A free kick with 20 minutes to play saw Mapes score her first goal of the season. Senior Jenna Gravitt (Morton, Ill.-Morton) delivered a free kick from the sideline to the feet of Mapes near the six. Controlling it, Mapes took one step and fired a shot into the back of the net, pushing IWU's lead to three, 4-1.

IWU returns home to host the front half of a doubleheader with the Titan men's team on Saturday, Sept. 27. Kickoff against UW-Platteville is set for 1 p.m. at Neis Field.
