Women's Soccer Downed by Dominican

Gray makes seven saves in loss

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team was downed, 1-0, in non-conference play Monday night, Sept. 22, by Dominican University. The Titans fell to 4-4-0 with the setback, while the Stars soared to 3-3-1.

In a game that saw the Green and White manufacture countless scoring opportunities, one untimely miscue set the table for the Stars go-ahead strike in the 59th minute. The Titans tallied a 20-16 lead in shots overall, including a 10-8 edge in shots on goal, while leading corners, 8-3. IWU was also whistled for 10 fouls and showed two yellow cards in the match. Sophomore Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Dr. Frank J. Hayden) collected seven saves over 90 minutes.

Sophomore Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington West) and junior Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West) disrupted the Stars' effort to switch fields, with Lampert gaining possession 10 yards outside the box. Wasting no time, Lampert took a touch towards goal and ripped a shot that was pushed out for an IWU corner in the 15th minute. Illinois Wesleyan delivered a great ball to the middle of the six, but Dominican forced a bouncing ball back to the 18. Not letting up, senior Bree Cordray (Bloomington, Ill.-University High) nailed a volley inside the post, but a Star defender made the save to keep the match scoreless.

The Stars came right back with a scoring chance of their own as DU dropped a ball up and over the Titans backline. Quick to pounce, Gray grabbed the bouncing ball near the goal line to disrupt the effort and send IWU back on the attack with the game deadlocked 0-0.

With the match scoreless in the 59th minute, Dominican made Illinois Wesleyan pay for a free kick just a few feet outside the 18. The Stars' Mia Dosen delivered the scoring kick, piping a shot through the four-person wall and past the outstretched arms of Gray's diving attempt.

IWU spent plenty of time on the offensive side of the field in the final minutes of the game, including four chances in the final 40 seconds, but the Stars defense held off the comeback effort.

The Titans hit the road again Wednesday, Sept. 24 for a non-conference midweek match against Knox College. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
