Women’s Soccer Bested by Top-Ranked Bears

Titans eye first road contest of season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team dropped a non-conference match, 6-0, to No. 1 WashU Tuesday night, Sept. 2, at Neis Field. The win marked 27 straight games without a loss for the Bears as WashU climbs to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Titans fall to 0-2-0.

WashU took the lead with a set-piece goal less than three minutes in. The Bears put a corner delivery to the far post for a volley and 1-nil lead.

After the Bears doubled their lead in the 14th minute, senior Maya Flemming (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge) came through with a key tackle to thwart another WashU scoring opportunity.

Despite key saves throughout the first period in her first career start in goal, sophomore Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Dr. Frank J. Hayden) was unable to save two shots on goal from WashU in the 26th and 28th minutes, as the Bears entered the halftime break enjoying a 4-0 lead.

The Titans created a handful of chances in the second half, but could not convert, eventually suffering a 6-0 defeat.

Gray finished with nine saves for the Green and White. Freshman Lauren Watson (Southaven, Miss.-Saint Mary's Episocpal) made four stops in her collegiate debut.

The Titans hit the road for their next match, taking the short drive to Jacksonville, Ill. to take on Illinois College on Saturday, Sept. 6. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at England Stadium.
