Men’s Soccer Draws with Illinois College to Remain Unbeaten

Lyons delivers lone goal

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.- Sophomore Ben Lyons (Orland Park, Ill-Carl Sandburg) scored the only Titans goal, as the Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team drew 1-1 with Illinois College Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Neis Field. Illinois Wesleyan remains unbeaten moving its record to 5-0-2, while Illinois College idles at 4-2-1.

Lyons, who has scored in every match but one, struck for his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 18th minute of the game. Sophomore transfer Blye Bickman (Edwardsville, Ill.-Edwardsville) drove down the far side of the field and volleyed a one-hop pass to Lyons, who jumped in the air and riffled it past the goalkeeper to get the Titans on the board.

The first period would stay 1-0, but not without scoring efforts from Illinois Wesleyan. Junior Joey Rodino (Palatine, Ill-Fremd) had a prime opportunity to put one in the back of the net. Rodino snuck one past the goalkeeper from 15 yards out, but multiple Blueboys were in the net to knock it out of bounce to prevent the goal.

Not long after, junior Ryder Coleman (Bannockburn, Ill-Deerfield) corraled a bouncing ball seven yards from the net, juked out a defender and missed the opportunity and he lofted it over the net.

Illinois College tried to answer the Lyons goal late in the first period. In the 35th minute, Adan Leon had a chance to tie it, but senior goalkeeper snatched it out of the air just before halftime

The second half was dominated by Illinois College. The offensive pressure increased as they were able to keep the ball in the Titans zone. Fifteen minutes into the second period, IC knotted up the score with a left-foot bullet from the top of the box, delievered by J'aiden Cranwell-Meneses to the top left corner of the net.

The offensive pressure continued for Illinois College, however, senior goalkeeper Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill-Cary-Grove), and the Titan defense, stood tall the rest of the period. Kedzior was busy all night, which led to a season-high in saves with six. The Cary, Ill native endured 10 shots with eight of them being on target. The Titan defense logged two team saves.

In the match, Illinois Wesleyan outshot Illinois College with 12 attempts, seven in the first period, and five in the second. The Blueboys struck four shots in the first and six in the second to total 10.

The Titans had a positive margin in corner kicks with five, compared to just two for the Blueboys.

The Green and White will continue its homestand against Lake Forest this Saturday, Sept. 17, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m.
