Women’s Soccer Runs Win Streak to Three with Win at Wartburg

Titans push their record to 3-2-0

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team won their third game in-a-row Sunday afternoon, Sept. 14, with a 2-1 road victory over Wartburg College. With the victory, Illinois Wesleyan pumped its record to 3-2-0 on the year, while Wartburg slipped to 2-5-0.

Illinois Wesleyan struck for two goals in the opening 15 minutes to take control. Sophomore Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) found the back of the net first, as IWU's attack pressured Wartburg on a goal kick. Winning a battle in the midfield, a loose ball was corralled by senior Kayley Carew (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) and sent to the feet of Wiley 25 yards out. The sophomore took one touch and ripped a shot up and over the finger tips of the Wartburg keeper to push the Titans ahead, 1-0, less than six minutes in.

The Green and White tacked on another goal 10 minutes later, as a throw-in led the Titan attack down the sideline. Sophomore Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South) edged out a Knight defender and dropped a pass back for junior Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West). With two Wartburg defenders nearing, Lampert delivered a long winding shot from the sideline to inside the far post, doubling the lead, 2-nil.

Sophomore Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Dr. Frank J. Hayden) maintained the Titan lead with six saves before Wartburg broke up the shutout with a goal in the 89th minute. Overall, IWU was outshot 16-9 in the contest, with Wartburg putting seven on target. The Titans finished with four shots on goal, while the Knights doubled up the Green and White in corners, 4-2.

The Titans continue their road stint with a midweek trip to Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. this Wednesday, Sept. 17. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
