Women’s Soccer Picks Up 5-1 Win Over Monmouth

Five Titans score in the victory

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team picked up its second win of the season in a 5-1 defeat of Monmouth College at Neis Field Wednesday night, Sept. 10. The Titans move to 2-2-0 on the season, while the Scots fall to 3-2-0.

IWU scored three times in the final 20 minutes of the first half and never looked back. Three Titans saw time in goal, with sophomore Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Dr. Frank J. Hayden) making two stops and earning the win. The Green and White dominated the match with a 51-4 stronghold in shots and a 13-1 advantage in corners.

Sophomore Ellen Dahlquist (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) challenged a defender down the end line before playing a ball to the six, where sophomore Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) volleyed in a pass for a 1-0 Titan lead in the 29th minute.

Illinois Wesleyan kept the pressure on, but back-to-back shots by the Titans were met by diving saves by the Scots keeper.

The Titans cracked the goal line moments later though, with sophomore Emily Kunzer (Elburn, Ill.-Kaneland) burying a pass from freshman MacKenzie Krieger (Mt. Zion, Ill.-Mt. Zion) to double the lead, 2-0, in the 35th minute.

Kayley Carew (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) tacked on another goal after the IWU attack continued to test the Monmouth defense, as the senior scored with 13 seconds left in the half. The goal, the second of Carew's career, pushed the home team ahead 3-nil at the break.

In the second half, the Titans continued their attack. A well-defended corner by the Green and White sent the Titans off on the counter as sophomore Taylor Haun (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) raced down the sideline. Eventually earning a throw in right in front of the IWU bench, fellow sophomore Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South) dropped a ball back to Haun at the edge of the 18. With one touch, she sent a cross to the boot of junior Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West) at the far post.

Lampert's goal, the fourth of her career, was followed by a goal from Dahlquist on a Wiley helper just over a minute later to push the Titans ahead, 5-0.

The Scots added on a goal of their own in the 64th minute courtesy of a free kick, but it would not be enough as the Titans came away with a 5-1 victory.

The Titans enjoy a few days off before hitting the road Sunday, Sept. 14 for a mid-day battle with Wartburg College. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
