Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Moves to 2-0 Behind Early Strikes

Titans host Eureka College Wednesday, Sept. 3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team scored twice in a three-minute span and never looked back in a 2-1 victory over Centre College Sunday, Aug. 31, on the final day of the JR Hoe Invitational hosted by Spalding University. IWU boosted its record to 2-0-0 with the victory, while Centre dropped to 0-2-0.

With the Colonels threatening in their attacking third, junior Matthew Perchik (Glenview, Ill.-New Trier) forced a turnover and played a ball out to sophomore Ben Lyons (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), who promptly booted it over a retreating CC backline. Junior Ryder Coleman (Bannockburn, Ill.-Deerfield) won the position battle between three Centre defenders and tapped a ball back out to Lyons on the far side. Taking just two touches, Lyons tucked a 1-on-1 opportunity inside the post for a 1-nil lead in the 16th minute.

Less than three minutes later, the Green and White doubled its lead. After an IWU free kick was initially thwarted, the Titans won possession back near midfield. Perchik ultimately gained control at the edge of the 18 and ripped a shot, but a sliding Colonel defender blocked the effort. Saving the deflection from going out for a goal kick, Perchik delivered a cross to the back post where junior Joey Rodino (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd) connected on a volley in the 19th minute.

Coming out of the half with a 2-0 lead, the Titans saw their advantage cut in half shortly out of the break as Centre was awarded a penalty kick.

The PK proved to be the final score by either side as senior Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) and the Titan defense kept the Colonels at bay. Kedzior completed the game with five saves on 15 shots faced, while the IWU offense manufactured eight corners and 16 shots.

Illinois Wesleyan is back in action Wednesday, Sept. 3, for its home opener against Illinois College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Neis Field.
