Early Goals Spurn Women’s Soccer in Loss to Storm

Titans back at home on Tuesday, September 2

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team dropped a competitive contest on opening night, Friday, August 29, at Neis Field to Simpson College, 2-1. The Titans fall to 0-1-0 on the season, while the Storm climb to 1-0-0.

Illinois Wesleyan began the game with elite defense, thwarting several Storm opportunities, including two corner kick attempts 16 minutes into the game. However, Ally Hoffa eventually capitalized, scoring two goals within a minute of each other in the 25th minute. Hoffa scored her second goal off of an IWU turnover near the goal line. The Titans were unable to score in the first 45 minutes, putting them behind 2-0 going into the second period.

In the second half, the Titan offense heated up with a free kick serving as the catalyst. A ball delivered into the box created a frenzy near goal, where senior Jenna Gravitt (Morton, Ill.-Morton) scored just the second goal of her Titan career in the 58th minute. Despite valiant offensive efforts from the Titans, including two shots that just missed off the foot of sophomore Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South) in the final 10 minutes of the game, the Green and White's comeback fell short.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ella Randall (San Francisco, Calif.-The Bay School of San Francisco) tied her career-high with 11 saves on the night, with eight coming in the second period.

The Titans return to action at Neis Field on Tuesday, September 2 to take on defending national champions, WashU. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
