Men’s Golf Posts Runner Up Finish at NCAA Championships

Titans notch fourth top-four finish

The 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship came to a close Friday, May 23, as the fifth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team played through an early rain delay before placing second at the national tournament with a 72-hole total of 1180. It is IWU's fourth top-four finish in program history, earning men's golf another banner inside the Shirk Center. 


Senior Griffin Pohl (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) put together his second straight All-American effort, tying for seventh. Pohl, who took home third-place a season ago, went three-under on the back nine to card a two-under, 70. The senior carded a 72-hole score of 290 to become the first Titan since Dex Reese (tied-third - 2012 & ninth - 2011) to place inside the top-10 in multiple NCAA Championships.

Junior Michael Spitzer (Hinsdale, Ill.-Hinsdale Central) earned a share of 14th, finding inside the top-15 for the second consecutive season. Spitzer went even par in the final round carding a 72 to conclude the tournament with a score of 294.

Juniors Juney Bai (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) and Aidan Healy (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln-Way West) along with senior Quinn Clifford (Chicago, Ill.-Brother Rice) rounded out IWU's performance. Bai posted a 298, with Healy turning in a 304 in his national tournament debut. Clifford tallied a 305.

Top-ranked Methodist carded the best round of the week on the final day of competition, carding a six-under 282 to claim the national title at 1175. IWU placed second at 1180, with No. 3 Emory (1182), No. 2 Washington & Lee (1183), and 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon (1185). Lynchburg's Edward Coffren won the individual championship with a four-day score of 280.

The tournament marked the conclusion of the 2024-25 season and the end of the storied collegiate careers of Pohl and Clifford. IWU won a total of five tournaments on the season, finishing off with its best NCAA Championship performance since winning the 2021 national title.
