Men’s Lacrosse Downs Cardinals in CCIW Opener

Titans back at Tucci Saturday, April 12

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – In its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team put on a dominate show inside Tucci Stadium Wednesday night, April 9, as the Titans defeated North Central College, 19-10. IWU moves ahead to 9-2 on the season and 1-0 in the CCIW while NCC dips to 6-3 and 0-1 in league play.

Illinois Wesleyan's 19 goals is the most scored in a game against NCC since the 2021 season saw the Titans put up 21 in the regular season matchup. Tonight's game saw the Green and White hold the advantage in most statistical categories, including shots (61-41), clears (19-15), ground balls (42-38), faceoff wins (17-14), and caused turnovers (17-9). North Central's goalie, Aidan Murphy managed 21 stops compared to IWU's 14 split between two keepers.

Senior goalie Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) served 50:39 minutes in goal and accrued 11 saves while junior Sam Scott (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) spent 9:21 between the pipes and recorded three saves.

The fifth-year duo of Bob Boone (Los Angeles, Calif.-Notre Dame) and Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo-Cheyenne Mountain) powered the Titan offense scoring five points each, all by way of goals. Boone's five goals set a new career-high for the Los Angeles, Calif. native. Sophomore Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) and senior Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) tied for second-most points on the evening with four apiece with each totaling one goal and three assists. In total, 10 Titans put away goals in the conference opener.

Leading the way on the defensive front was senior Nick Horrocks (Boulder, Colo.-Fairview), setting new career-highs with a team-lead five caused turnovers and six ground balls. The senior also notched an assist. Senior Nick Schroeder (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) went 14-for-23 at the X and had a team-lead 10 ground balls while also getting in on the scoring action with a goal and an assist.

IWU cracked the scoreboard with a four-goal run to start the game thanks to goals from fifth-year Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap), junior Billy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel), Schroeder, and Eastburn.

The Cardinals found their first goal with 9:25 left to play in the first period but it was the connection from T. McHugh to Eastburn to hold the lead at 5-1. NCC managed to net the next two goals, the first to close out the first period scoring before opening up the second with a goal a minute in to cut the Titan lead to two at 5-3.

Boone went on to power a three-goal run for the Green and White withing a minute-long span, ripping two past the Cardinal goalie while senior Sam Skelton (Portland, Ore.-Franklin) got in on the scoring off the faceoff win and dish from Schroeder.

A four minute scoring drought for both teams was interrupted by a Cardinal goal with four minutes left in the half. In the final 18 seconds before the break, Eastburn fired one in off the feed from Weinberg, before sophomore Jake Kahoun (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) scored with two seconds to spare to give IWU a 10-4 advantage heading into halftime.

North Central took hold of the third quarter with a 3-1 run, bringing the score to 11-7 in favor of the Titans.

Freshman Carlo Adams (Knoxville, Tenn.-West) maximized a man-up opportunity to open the final 15 minutes. The McHugh brothers connected for IWU's 13th goal of the game with B. McHugh setting up T. McHugh for the goal.

IWU and NCC traded the next two points before Eastburn dumped in a man-up goal. Boone scored two more highlight-worthy man-down goals, one being a curl around rip to make it a 17-9 game. Junior Cole Kennedy (Walnut Creek, Calif.-De La Salle) dished to Eastburn for the fifth-year's fifth goal of the game to double up the score before Kahoun's goal with 12 seconds left on the clock sealed the 19-10 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan is back at Tucci Stadium Saturday, April 12, for another round of conference action as the Titans host Carthage College at 1 p.m.
