Men’s Lacrosse Fends Off Firebirds

Titans climb to 2-0 in conference play

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – A College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin battle between the Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team and Carthage College lived up to its billing Saturday afternoon, April 12, at Tucci Stadium as the Titans upended the Firebirds, 11-9. With the key conference win, IWU ran its record to 10-2 (2-0 CCIW), while CC slipped to 9-4 (0-2 CCIW).

A level matchup across the board, Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage battled through 60 minutes of action as two of the top-scoring offenses in the conference. IWU held a slim advantage in shots, 43-42, saves, 13-10, and caused turnovers, 10-5. The Firebirds led in shots on goal, 22-21, clears, 20-17, and faceoff wins, 13-11.

Senior Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) and sophomore Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) led the Titans with five points apiece. Weinberg notched four goals, an assist, three ground balls, and a caused turnover, while McHugh's five points were all by way of assists. McHugh also had two scoops and caused a turnover. Fifth-years Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Cheyenne Mountain) and Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) notched four and two goals, respectively, and junior Billy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) had IWU's other goal.

At the X, senior Nick Schroeder (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) went 11-for-22 and had six ground balls and one caused turnover. Junior Karsten Nordlie (Roscoe, Ill.-Hononegah Community) had a team-high two caused turnovers to go with his five scoops, tying for the second-most ground balls with B. McHugh. Senior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) put on a show between the pipes, recording multiple clutch saves, totaling 13 on the day.

Carthage got out to a hot start, shutting out IWU 3-0 in the opening quarter.

Finding their rhythm in the second, T. McHugh dished to Eastburn for the Titans' first goal of the game. The duo connected again three minutes later as Eastburn utilized a shot fake to bury it and cut the deficit to one at 3-2. Nordlie forced a Firebird turnover and displaced his defender on the scoop just as he found Weinberg to deliver the equalizer with 7:38 left in the half.

Thanks to the feed from fellow fifth-year Bob Boone (Los Angeles, Calif.-Notre Dame), Black sniped a goal to take a 4-3 lead. Carthage managed to find another goal to bring it back even, but Billy McHugh took it all the way in from the opposite side of the field to regain the 5-4 lead heading into the break.

Carthage struck first to open the second half just before IWU's strict defense collapsed on a Firebird scoring chance that resulted in an unassisted goal for Black for IWU to move ahead 6-5.

The Firebirds answered with a three-goal run for the 8-6 advantage. Weinberg ripped a goal in off the assist from Timothy McHugh to bring it back within one 8-7, going into the final 15 minutes.

Less than a minute into the final period, Weinberg once again turned in a clutch effort, swatting in a goal in one motion off the rebound of Boone's shot to spark a three-goal run for the Titans. A quick restart off a wide-shot saw T. McHugh connect with Weinberg for another big rip. Schroeder won the ensuing faceoff and sent the ball to Weinberg who dished to Eastburn to go up 10-8.

The Firebirds brought it back within one with 9:24 left to play. The dynamic duo of T. McHugh and Eastburn connected once more to give the IWU the two-goal cushion and close out the scoring as the Green and White secured its second CCIW win, 11-9.

Illinois Wesleyan takes its conference slate on the road as the Titans head to Elmhurst University, Saturday, April 12. Game time on Langhorst Field is set for 1 p.m.
