Softball Splits Day One of Home Tournament

Titans’ record stands at 13-7

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team downed The College of Wooster, 12-2, on day one of the Titans' second home tournament of the season. The lopsided win wrapped up a split on the day as IWU (13-7) dropped a game to University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 10-8.

Game One: UW-Eau Claire 10, Illinois Wesleyan 8
The Blugolds grabbed a three-run lead in the third, using an error to get the rally started before timely hits drove in runs.

Freshman Bella Pinter (LaMoille, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) put the Titans on the board with one swing of the bat in the fourth. Pinter drove a 1-1 offering out to left to cut the deficit to two, 3-1, with her second home run of the year.

UW-Eau Claire got it back with a three-run shot in the top of the fifth, charging ahead, 6-1, but IWU answered with another roundtripper in the sixth. After freshman Ella Hermes (Peru, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) reached with an infield single, junior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) blasted a two-run homer down the left field line. The roundtripper marked the third of the year for Post and pulled the Green and White within three, 6-3.

The Blugolds upped their lead to seven with a four-run sixth, but the Titans pounced for five runs in the bottom half of the frame to keep it within two, 10-8, into the seventh. Illinois Wesleyan's five-run frame featured hits by senior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High), Post, along with juniors Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara), Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia), as well as freshmen Julia Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett), Riley McDoniel (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), and Pinter. McDoniel cranked a two-run double, while Post, Kuhn, and Pinter notched RBI singles.

The Titans brought the winning run to the plate with one out, but a line drive was snagged and the Green and White were doubled up to end the threat.

Illinois Wesleyan racked up 12 hits to UW-Eau Claire's 11. Pinter went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Kuhn and Post notched two hits apiece.

Freshman Maddie Pool (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton Warrenville South) struckout three over 4.2 innings as the starter. She allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits as the pitcher of record. Junior Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) threw the final 1.2 innings allowing just one hit and striking out two.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 12, Wooster 2
Wooster climbed ahead early, manufacturing a run on the heels of an Illinois Wesleyan miscue, but the Titans scored one in the third and two in the fourth to take control, 3-1.
IWU's first run came courtesy of heady baserunning by Kuhn and sophomore Margo Geary (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North). With Kuhn on first and Geary standing on third, Illinois Wesleyan used its speed to plate the tying run. Kuhn worked her way into a pickle and stayed in it just long enough to give Geary the green-light to take off from third, leaving the game at 1-1.

The Titans tacked on two more in their next trip to the plate, with McDoniel singling to open the frame. A sacrifice bunt moved her to second and Pinter ripped a double to right to give IWU the lead, 2-1. Kuhn later whacked an RBI single, scoring Pinter, to drive the lead to two, 3-1.

After Beckman's RBI single in the sixth, the Green and White erupted for eight runs on nine hits in the seventh. Wissmiller doubled and Post followed with a single before Milgazo walked to load the bases. Sophomore Annika Brown (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) poked a single into left to score one. Freshman Grace Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) followed with a two-run knock. Senior Kennady Estes (Warrenton, Mo.-Warrenton) capped the scoring with an RBI bloop-single to right on the heels of run-scoring hits by Kuhn, senior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia), Post, and Beckman as IWU charged ahead, 12-1, into the bottom of the seventh.

The Fighting Scots scraped one run across in their final trip to the plate, but the Titans came out on top, 12-2.

IWU and Wooster will square off again tomorrow, April 6, with a 10 a.m. first pitch. The Titans will then eye revenge against UW-Eau Claire at 2:30 p.m.
