Softball Secures Sunday Sweep

Titans top Wooster & UW-Eau Claire, move to 15-7 on the year

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team put together a pair of gritty performances to pull off a sweep of the final day of the IWU Invite II at Inspiration Field Sunday, April 6. The Titans edged out The College of Wooster, 5-3, in game one before upending University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 6-4, in the final game of the weekend. Illinois Wesleyan upped its record to 15-7 with the wins, while Wooster dipped to 7-15. UWEC left Bloomington with an 18-6 record.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 5, Wooster 3
An error allowed Wooster to plate two runs in the third, and the Fighting Scots' lead held into the bottom of the fifth.

Trailing 2-0, IWU batted around in the fifth as the Titans plated five runs on six hits. Freshman Grace Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) drew a leadoff walk and scooted to second on freshman Riley McDoniel's (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) pinch-hit, bunt-single. Sophomore Hailey Milgazo (Poway, Calif.-Poway) loaded the bases with an infield single and junior Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) singled to left to score Wilkens. Senior Ava Khoury's (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) RBI single was followed by a two-run knock by junior Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) before junior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) tacked on another run with a double down the left field line.

The Titans led 5-2 into the sixth, where a leadoff single came around to score on a few errant pitches. The Fighting Scots tried to swipe another run, but IWU made the tag at the plate to end the threat.

Junior Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) entered the circle in the top of the seventh and wrapped up the win with a 1-2-3 inning. Certa was ultimately credited with a save, while freshman Ella Hermes (Peru, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) picked up the win. The Titans used a four-player complement of pitchers as junior Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) got the start and freshman Maddie Pool (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton Warrenville South) made a relief appearance.

Illinois Wesleyan finished with eight hits to Wooster's five. Wissmiller and Milgazo each went 2-for-3, while Wissmiller drove in two.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 6, UW-Eau Claire 4
A leadoff single came around to score in UW-Eau Claire's half of the first, but Illinois Wesleyan powered ahead in the top of the second. Khoury kicked off the second with a double to the right-center wall and stood on third after a beautifully executed sacrifice bunt by Wissmiller with Post stepping into the box. Post delivered a high-flying fly ball out to left, her fourth homer of the season, to put IWU on top, 2-1.

The Blugolds climbed back ahead in the third though, as the UWEC pitcher cranked a three-run homer out to left center, but the Titans answered right back.

Post and Milgazo drew walks as two Titans were aboard for freshman Bella Pinter (LaMoille, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) in the top of the fourth. After UWEC had a meeting in the circle, Pinter stepped in and whacked a three-run homerun out to left. The roundtripper, Pinter's third of the season, reclaimed a one-run lead, 5-4, for the Green and White.

In the fifth, Khoury registered her second double of the day, this time going oppo to put a runner in scoring position early. Post came through with a timely single to center and Khoury scored from second to extend the Titan lead, 6-4.

The Green and White shutdown the Blugolds over the final few innings to earn the victory and sweep the day.

Illinois Wesleyan finished with a 7-4 lead in hits with Khoury and Post tallying two hits apiece. Pinter and Post tied for the team lead with three RBIs each.

Certa was phenomenal in the circle, tossing a complete game and tied a career-high with eight strikeouts. Certa jumped to 8-2 on the season with the win.

Illinois Wesleyan looks ahead to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play beginning Thursday, April 10. IWU hosts North Central College in a league twin bill with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
