Men’s Tennis Splits CCIW Matches

Titans fall to Wheaton, respond with sweep at Elmhurst

WHEATON, Ill. & ELMHURST, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team split its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin matches at Wheaton University and Elmhurst University Saturday, April 5. IWU (5-8, 1-1 CCIW) fell to Wheaton (7-6, 3-0 CCIW) 5-2, before responding with a 7-0 sweep at Elmhurst (1-2, 0-1 CCIW) to close out its jam-packed day.

After dropping the doubles portion to open the contest, IWU began individual play by taking the top two spots. Junior Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) locked in the win at No. 1 singles behind set scores of 6-3, 6-4. Junior Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Phillips Exeter Academy) notched the victory at No. 2 singles. After taking the opening set, 6-4, Vigneri fell in a tiebreaker in the second, 7-6 (9). The Casper, Wyo. native responded in the third set, taking the super tiebreaker 10-8. 

IWU was unable to snag any other victories, falling 5-2. 

Illinois Wesleyan 7, Elmhurst 0
Following a short trek over to Elmhurst, the Titans responded quickly against the Bluejays. The Green and White logged the one point rewarded in doubles play behind a sweep. At No. 1 doubles, Turnbull and fifth-year Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) notched the win with a score of 6-0. Sophomore Thad Dillow (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) and junior Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) registered a 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles. Securing the doubles sweep, sophomores Chase Tomecki (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) and Sebastian Rasquin (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) also took their contest at No. 3 doubles, 6-0. 

Illinois Wesleyan continued its dominant performance in singles action, notching the win in all six slots. Turnbull and Vigneri logged their second individual wins of the day, as Turnbull won No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, while Vigneri stole his sets 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3 individuals, McCoy swept his sets, winning both 6-0. Dillow followed at No. 4, securing both of his sets 6-2. Playing at No. 5 singles, Hammond notched a win by taking both sets in sweeping fashion, 6-0. Tomecki locked in the sweep with a victory at No. 6 singles, taking his sets 6-0, 6-0. 

IWU will host Carroll University Friday, April 11, for a 3 p.m. bout at Evergreen Racquet Club.
