Women’s Lacrosse Sees Season End at Carthage

Titans fall in CCIW Semifinals 16-4

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team concluded its 2025 season in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Semifinals, falling 16-4 at Carthage College Wednesday night, April 30. With the loss, IWU ends its season with an overall record of 8-9. Carthage improves to 12-3, and will face Carroll University in the CCIW Tournament Championship Saturday, May 3.

With 13 saves in goal, senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) shattered the program's single-season record, as she finished with 165 saves in her final season donning the Green and White, surpassing the previous mark of 162 set by Claire Quist in 2016.

Junior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) led the Titan offense, finishing with two goals. Junior Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) and freshman Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) also scored goals in the contest. Junior Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) notched a team-high two ground balls.

After Carthage opened the game with a goal, senior Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) won the draw to set up the Green and White offense. Newton wasted little time to even the contest, as she buried her first shot of the night to make it 1-1 with 12:46 remaining in the opening quarter.

A free-position goal gave the Firebirds the lead, and the home team made it 3-1 at the 5:13 mark. Rymarcsuk came up with a save with just over a minute to play, ending the first period with the Titans trailing by a pair.

The second quarter saw the Firebirds score off the opening draw, making it 4-1. Rymarcsuk stopped a shot, giving the Titans some momentum, and Riepe fed Newton for a goal to cut the deficit to two, 4-2, with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.

Carthage scored six unanswered goals to take a 10-2 lead into halftime.

The Firebirds struck first in the third period, but Fountain ended the run with a free-position goal, making it 11-3.

Carthage net two more goals to carry a 13-3 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Drawing a free-position with 1:53 remaining, Gibson found the back of the net for a goal, making it 15-4. Carthage struck one last time to finish the game.

The loss marks the end of the careers of Mia Fiandaca, Lizzie Rymarcsuk, Avery Setzler, and Mallory Mills.

Finishing her first year at the helm, head coach Abby Kushina returns 16 Titans for the 2026 season.
