Softball Sacks No. 16 UW-Whitewater with First Loss

Titans split doubleheader with Warhawks

WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team split a doubleheader at No. 16 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Thursday afternoon, April 3. The Titans (12-6) dropped game one to the Warhawks (15-1), 4-1, but bounced back to blank UWW, 3-0, in game two.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 1, No. 16 UW-Whitewater 4
Illinois Wesleyan executed small ball to manufacture a 1-0 lead in the second. After junior Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) doubled, a bunt scooted her to third. Senior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) came through with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Wissmiller from third.

UWW strung together three hits to level the game in the third before putting up two in the fifth. The Warhawks used a solo homer to left-center and an RBI double to push ahead, 3-1, into the sixth.

The Green and White put runners on in each of the next two innings but could not plate a run as the Titans fell, 4-1.

Junior Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) earned the start in the circle and went five innings as the pitcher of record. She finished with four strikeouts.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 3, No. 16 UW-Whitewater 0
The Titans pounced for three runs in the top of the second as junior Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) singled to start the frame. With Beckman on second after a stolen base, Khoury roped an RBI single to left. Freshman pitcher Maddie Pool (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton Warrenville South) helped her own cause moments later, cranking the first homer of her career to left-center. The two-run shot gave IWU a 3-0 edge.

Pool tossed a complete game shutout in the circle, allowing just two hits and striking out five. With the win, the freshman pitcher moved to 4-1 on the season and recorded the first complete game shutout of her career.

Offensively, IWU finished with a 6-2 lead in hits. Khoury and Pool combined for five of the six hits. Khoury finished 3-for-3 with one run scored and another driven in, while Pool's 2-for-3 day included a homer and a double. The roundtripper was the first of Pool's career and marked the first by a Titan pitcher since Natalie Grubczak in the 2022 season.

Illinois Wesleyan hosts its second straight weekend tournament this Saturday-Sunday, April 5-6, as the Titans host The College of Wooster and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
