Baseball Triumphant Over Millikin

Titans down Big Blue 7-2

DECATUR, Ill. - Early runs for the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team led to its second College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin win, this time defeating Millikin University Thursday, April 3. IWU (9-10, 2-2 CCIW) outscored MU (11-11, 0-3 CCIW) 7-2 in Decatur, Ill. at the Workman Family Baseball Field.

The Green and White's starting pitcher, junior Jake Pullam (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine), delivered a dominant performance on the mound, recording three strikeouts over seven innings to earn the win and improve his record to 4-0. In relief, juniors Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) and Cole Shamhart (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) each threw one inning, with Shamhart striking out two batters.

At the plate, senior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) had an impressive outing, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Sophomore John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) launched a home run and drove in three on the day.

IWU dominated offensively, collecting 14 hits to Millikin's four. The Titans racked up six extra-base hits and played flawless defense, showcasing their all-around prowess on both sides of the game.

The Green and White erupted offensively in the first and second innings, scoring seven runs to take an early lead. The attack began with Figus, who led off with a single to right field. He was quickly followed by a double from fellow senior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg), putting Figus on third. Senior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) then delivered a double down the left field line, driving in both Gadomski and Figus to give Illinois Wesleyan a 2-0 advantage.

Ferraro blasted a towering home run over the centerfield fence, bringing in two more runs for the Titans and marking his third homer of the season. The blast pushed the score to 4-0 in favor of IWU.

Senior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) followed with a double to right-center, and a sacrifice bunt by junior Gage Wolfe (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) moved Woltman to third. Freshman Ben Ford (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley) ripped a single to left-center, allowing Woltman to easily cross the plate as the Titans ended the top of the first with a commanding 5-0 lead.

The offensive onslaught continued into the top of the second as the Titans added two more runs to extend their lead. Figus led off, this time with a walk, and Gadomski singled to right field, advancing Figus to second. Tomhave's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position for Gurgone who kept things rolling. Gurgone singled up the middle, scoring Figus and pushing the lead to 6-0. Ferraro put a ball in play to score Gadomski and up the lead to 7-0.

After a scoreless stretch spanning three innings, Millikin finally managed to put a run on the board, but Illinois Wesleyan still held a commanding 7-1 lead. MU scored one more in the bottom of the eighth, but IWU held the home team scoreless in the ninth to end the game at 7-2.
