Duff’s Walk Off in Game Two Secures Saturday Sweep for Baseball

Titans finish series at Elmhurst, tomorrow

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – A dramatic walk-off by senior William Duff (Western Springs, Ill.-St. Ignatius) lifted the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep over College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe Elmhurst University Saturday, April 5. The Titans (11-10, 4-2 CCIW) cruised to a 10-1 victory in game one and edged the Bluejays (7-15, 1-3 CCIW) 13-12 in a thrilling walk-off win in game two.

Game One: Titans 10, Bluejays 1

Junior Will Davidsmeier (Virginia, Ill.-Beardstown) earned the win in game one, pitching seven strong innings while striking out seven and allowing just one run. Freshman Cole Benson (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) came on in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

Sophomore John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) led the offensive charge, going 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored. Senior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) also had a standout game, finishing 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a run.

The Titans dominated offensively, racking up 20 hits to the Bluejays' four. IWU had two extra-base hits and 10 RBIs in the contest.

Illinois Wesleyan took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Figus singled to right field and advanced to second on a balk. Senior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) then singled to bring Figus home, putting the Titans ahead 1-0. Elmhurst tied it up in the top of the third, but the Green and White responded with a five-run bottom of the fifth inning, including key hits from junior Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest), freshman Matt Hudik (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East), and Tomhave, to take a commanding 5-1 lead.

IWU didn't stop there, adding an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on Ferraro's home run, and four more in the bottom of the seventh, capped off by a two-run single from Flagg, extending the lead to 10-1.

Game Two: IWU 13, EU 12

In a thrilling game two, the Titans held off a late Elmhurst rally to win 13-12. Senior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) led the charge, going 4-for-6 with two doubles, two RBIs, and a run scored. Tomhave and Hudik each contributed two hits, with Hudik also scoring three runs and Tomhave driving in two.

Freshman Michael Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) started on the mound, striking out three in 1.2 innings. Seniors Brady Hartman (Milan, Ill.-Sherrard) and Luke Schwab (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South), along with juniors Nathan Waterman (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) and Luke Costello (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South), all pitched in relief. Waterman earned his first win of the season, with Costello notching his second save.

Elmhurst jumped to an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the second. The Titans answered in the bottom of the second with a rally that saw Flagg score on a single from sophomore Luca Morelli (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Adlai E. Stevenson), and Hudik crossed the plate on a walk. The Bluejays responded with four runs in the top of the third to extend their lead to 8-2.

IWU fought back in the bottom of the fourth, starting with a run-scoring single from Tomhave. The Titans chipped away at the lead, pulling within four, 9-5, by the end of the fourth. Elmhurst added a run in the top of the fifth, but IWU continued to close the gap, scoring one more in the bottom of the sixth and a pair in the bottom of the seventh IWU took its first lead of the game, 11-10, thanks to a three-run home run by Ferraro.

The Titans added another run in the bottom of the eighth, making it 12-10, but Elmhurst tied the game in the top of the ninth. With the score tied at 12-12, Ferraro led off the bottom of the ninth with a double, and after advancing on a wild pitch, freshman Derek Ittner (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) came in as a pinch-runner, relieving Ferraro. Duff, who had delivered a walk-off last season, stepped up and hit a ground ball to third, which was mishandled by the Bluejays, allowing Ittner to score and giving the Titans a 13-12 victory.

IWU will travel to Pfund Stadium Park on Sunday, April 6, for the final game of the series against Elmhurst. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
