Softball Sweeps North Central

Certa records 200th career strikeout

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team took care of North Central College by scores of 7-2 and 8-0 Wednesday, April 23, at Inspiration Field. The Titans upped their record to 25-7 overall and 10-0 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, while the Cardinals stumbled to 16-18 on the year and 5-9 in league games.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 7, North Central 2
Junior Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) drew a one-out free pass, swiped second, and scooted into third on a wild pitch. Senior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) came through with an RBI groundout to push IWU ahead, 1-0.

The Titans got their first hit of the game in the second, plating two runs behind speed on the bases to expand their lead to 3-0.

North Central came back with a two-run third to trim the Illinois Wesleyan lead to one, 3-2, as a string of base hits allowed the Cardinals to scrape their first runs across the plate.

Beckman once again kicked things off for the Green and White, singling to start the bottom of the third. Senior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) later doubled to right to score Beckman easily and reclaim a two-run Titan lead, 4-2.

IWU continued its scoring in the fourth, this time plating three runs on three hits. Junior Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) put together a quality at bat, ultimately earning a walk. With the intention of sacrificing to move the runner, freshman Grace Wilkens' (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) speed paid off with a bunt-single to put two on for sophomore Hailey Milgazo (Poway, Calif.-Poway). Milgazo whacked a run-scoring double to the right-center gap and Kuhn added an RBI single as the Titans took a 7-2 lead into the fifth.

Junior Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) finished off a complete game effort, retiring the last 12 batters en route to her 12th win of the year. Certa collected six strikeouts in the win, surpassing 200 for her career.

Illinois Wesleyan picked up 12 hits to North Central's five. All nine hitters notched base knocks in the win, with junior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West), Wilkens, and Milgazo tallying two apiece. Kuhn was credited with two of IWU's five RBIs.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 8, North Central 0 (6 inn.)
A leadoff walk came around to score in the top of the second as Post earned a free pass and was lifted for sophomore pinch runner Parker Cash (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg). A sac bunt and wild pitch was followed by a walk by freshman Ella Hermes (Peru, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) to put runners on the corners. Wilkens singled to the left side to bring home Cash for a 1-0 Titan edge through one and a half.

After Kuhn was beamed by a pitch, Post cranked a 2-2 offering over the green giant in center field. The two-run shot, Post's seventh homer of the year, upped the Green and White lead to 3-0 with NCC coming to the plate in the third.

Sophomore Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) flashed the leather as she fielded back-to-back grounders back to the circle to strand a runner on third, keeping IWU's lead intact into the fourth.

Wissmiller roped a leadoff double to the grass in right-center as Illinois Wesleyan's bats went back to work. Milgazo collected the RBI with a single back up the middle, extending the advantage to four.

Kuhn tacked on a two-run single in the sixth after Wilkens and Wissmiller notched base hits. Battling at the plate, Khoury uncorked a two-run homer to push the game to run-rule territory, 8-0, midway through the sixth.

Holland worked around a leadoff single to induce three straight groundouts and wrap up the win. The sophomore went all 7.0 innings, securing her third complete game of the year, and bumping her record to 5-1 on the year. Holland struck out three, walked one, and let up three hits, while notching her second shutout of the season.

IWU's offense registered a dozen hits in the win with five different Titans notching multi-hit games. Milgazo and Khoury each finished 2-for-4, with Wilkens, Wissmiller, and Pinter going 2-for-3. Kuhn, Khoury and Post paced the run-production with two RBIs apiece.

Illinois Wesleyan embarks on a four-game road trip to Wisconsin this weekend, April 26-27. The Titans will play at Carroll University Saturday, April 26, before traveling to Carthage College for a twinbill Sunday, April 27.
