Records Rewritten as Softball Rolls Carroll

Titans travel to Carthage tomorrow, April 27

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team set the single game record for home runs and senior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) claimed sole possession of the program's career doubles record in a sweep of Carroll University, April 26. The Titans (27-7, 12-0 CCIW) homered a record-setting five times in an 11-1 rout of the Pios (13-21, 4-10 CCIW) before sealing the sweep with a 9-1 win in game two of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin twinbill.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 11, Carroll 1 (6 inn.)
Carroll loaded the bases in the first inning, using a pair of infield singles and a walk to put some early pressure on IWU, but junior Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) thwarted the threat with a strikeout to strand three.

After the offense came up empty in its first trip to the plate, the Titans scored in each of the next five innings. Senior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) and junior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) clubbed back-to-back linedrive solo homers to give IWU a 2-0 lead.

Junior Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) joined the party with a leadoff homer in the third, and freshman Bella Pinter (LaMoille, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) followed with one later in the inning. With Khoury on base after getting beamed, Pinter sent a homer out to straightaway center for a 5-0 advantage.

Carroll broke up the shutout with a run in its half of the third. The Pios used back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt to put two in scoring position, but only mustered one run.

Freshman Julia Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) drew a leadoff walk in the fourth and scampered home on Kuhn's RBI groundout. Khoury put a ball in play, reaching via an error, and bringing home Beckman at Illinois Wesleyan's cushion grew to 7-1.

Pinter cranked her second homer of the game in the fifth, as the Titans broke the program's single-game home run record with five in the win. A two-run single by freshman Ella Hermes (Peru, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) and an RBI single off the bat of junior Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) tacked on insurance runs in an 11-1 six-inning victory.

Certa nabbed the win in the circle, while junior Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) turned in a shutdown performance in relief. Certa tossed four innings, striking out three, while Gatchell threw the final two frames and fanned a pair.

Illinois Wesleyan cranked out 13 hits in the game, with Hermes going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Pinter posted a 2-for-2 effort with three runs driven in, two runs scored, and two walks, while Beckman finished 2-for-4 and crossed home plate three times.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 9, Carroll 1 (6 inn.)
Illinois Wesleyan secured an early 2-0 lead on the backs of the Wilkens twins in game two. Hermes drew a one-out walk and swiped second on a wild pitch before Julia Wilkens delivered a run-scoring double to left-center. The knock extended the inning and brought Grace Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) to the plate, who ripped a RBI single down the left field line.

The Pios pulled within one after an RBI double in the fourth, but IWU plated three runs on two hits and an error in the bottom half to maintain a comfortable lead. Wissmiller drew a leadoff walk and Grace Wilkens singled to third base. Beckman took a pitch off the arm to load the bases, where IWU's speed paid off on a wild pitch as Julia Wilkens slid home safely. Khoury earned one of her four walks in the game to once again load the bases and Post came through with a two-run single up the middle. The timely hit pushed the Titans ahead, 5-1, into the fifth.

Wissmiller proved to be the catalyst for the Green and White once again in the fifth, notching a leadoff single through the left side. Julia Wilkens beat out an infield single and Kuhn smacked an RBI knock to left as IWU's lead grew to five, 6-1, into the sixth.

Gatchell came in from the bullpen in the top half of the sixth, inheriting a pair of baserunners, but immediately stymied the Pioneers. The junior lefty struckout three straight, all swinging, to send the game to the bottom of the sixth.

Hermes and Wissmiller singled in back-to-back plate appearances to put runners on the corner with one out. Julia Wilkens doubled to score Heremes and Grace Wilkens' bunt single loaded the bases. With two out and the bags packed, Kuhn singled to left, scoring two, to walk-off the win, 9-1.

Illinois Wesleyan was credited with 13 hits in the contest as Julia Wilkens led the way with a 3-for-4 showing alongside two RBIs and four runs scored. Kuhn finished 3-for-5 with three driven in, while Grace Wilkens also recorded three hits in the win.

Sophomore Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) got the start and threw five innings of two-hit ball, striking out one and walking two. With the win, Holland's record hopped to 6-1 on the year. Gatchell closed out the game, ringing up each of the three hitters she faced.

Illinois Wesleyan will finish out its weekend trip in Wisconsin tomorrow, April 27, at Carthage College. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
