Softball Secures Senior Day Sweep

Titans jump to 23-7 overall, 8-0 in conference play

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team celebrated its Senior Day with a sweep of Elmhurst University Saturday, April 19, at Inspiration Field. The Titans upped their record to 23-7 overall and 8-0 in league play, while the Bluejays dropped to 6-23-1 (2-12 CCIW) as IWU downed EU by scores of 4-3 and 6-1.

Prior to the doubleheader, Illinois Wesleyan honored seniors Kennady Estes, Ava Khoury, and Jen Kuhn. Together, the trio has amassed a 108-50 overall record, posted a combined grade point average of 3.83, and has recorded hundreds of hours of community service.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 4, Elmhurst 3
A one-out infield single by junior Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) came around to score for the Titans in the bottom of the first. After Beckman singled and stole second, senior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) roped a single to right-center for an early 1-0 IWU edge.

Elmhurst was on the verge of tying the game up in the second as the Bluejays advanced a runner to third with one out. Senior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) had other plans though, scooping up a ground ball at short and firing home to junior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West), who tagged the runner out, to keep IWU's lead intact.

Post sparked another run-scoring opportunity for the Titans in the fourth, making it to second on a Bluejay error. Freshman Riley McDoniel (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) entered as a pinch runner and came across on an RBI groundout by junior Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia).

Back-to-back extra-base hits to the left-center gap saw the Bluejays pounce for three runs in the top of the fifth as Elmhurst claimed its first lead of the day, 3-2. An error put the leadoff batter aboard and a single up the middle had EU setup with runners on the corners before the timely knocks produced three runs.

Illinois Wesleyan had a scoring chance of its own in the fifth, but came up empty, stranding two. Post changed that with one swing in the sixth however, as she belted her team-leading fifth homer of the season. The junior catcher blasted a 1-1 offering out towards the videoboard, tying the game at 3-3, into the seventh.

Beckman ripped a one-out single and swiped second before taking third on Kuhn's single. With runners on the corners and one out, Khoury delivered a fly ball to center. Tagging from third, Beckman slid home safely and the Titans walked off for a 4-3 victory.

IWU outhit EU 9-5 in the contest, with Beckman turning in a 3-for-4 showing alongside two runs scored. Khoury drove in two in a 2-for-3 effort, while Post and Wissmiller tallied one RBI each.

Junior Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) put together a dazzling show, striking out a career-high nine Bluejays. She yielded three runs, none of which were earned, with five hits.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 6, Elmhurst 1
Similar to the first game, the second game's scoring got underway with Khoury's RBI single that brought home Beckman.

Elmhurst scored once in the bottom of the opening inning, but Illinois Wesleyan used a pair of homers to charge back ahead. Kuhn cranked a solo shot in the third and Post delivered a two-run roundtripper in the fifth to give the Green and White a 4-1 edge.

The Titans tacked on another in the sixth, as Kuhn drove in one as she reached with an error. After taking third on a fly out, Kuhn scampered home on a wild pitch to up the lead to five, 6-1.

Holland finished off the game with a 1-2-3 seventh. The quick inning closed out a masterful performance that saw her go the distance with three strikeouts and just one hit allowed.

IWU tallied eight hits on the day to EU's one. Post and freshman Grace Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) each notched two hits, with Post and Kuhn tying for the team lead with two RBIs.

Illinois Wesleyan hosts North Central College Wednesday, April 23, to finish out its six-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Inspiration Field.
