Titans secure first CCIW win of season, head to Millikin tomorrow

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – A powerful offensive display propelled the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team to a commanding 11-4 victory over Carroll University on Horenberger Field Tuesday, April 1. The Titans (8-10, 1-2 CCIW) secured their College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin win of the season in the defeat of Carroll (11-9, 2-2 CCIW).

Senior Dalen Banks (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) made the start on the mound, pitching 3.1 innings and striking out four batters. He was relieved by sophomore Caleb Martinez (Wheeling, Ill.-Wheeling), junior Luke Costello (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South), and senior Brady Hartman (Milan, Ill.-Sherrard). Hartman earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings, as he faced nine batters and induced five ground outs while scattering two hits and a walk.

Offensively, senior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) led the charge, going 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs, three RBIs, and a double. Freshmen Ben Ford (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley) and Matt Hudik (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) both turned in impressive 2-for-3 performances, with Ford adding two runs and Hudik contributing a run and an RBI.

The Titans racked up 14 hits, compared to Carroll's nine, and drove in 10 RBIs while recording 27 putouts and 12 assists on defense. IWU's pitching staff combined for six strikeouts, while CU only notched one.

After three scoreless innings, Carroll struck first in the top of the fourth. After scoring once in the top of the frame, the Pioneers tacked on three more runs in the fifth to go up 4-0.

The Titans responded with a dramatic offensive explosion in the bottom of the fifth. Ford led off with a single up the middle, followed by a base hit from junior Gage Wolfe (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and another from junior Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest). Ford's run put Illinois Wesleyan on the board, and with Wolfe and Flagg on base, Hudik laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance them into scoring position.

With the bases in motion, senior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) singled down the right field line, scoring both Wolfe and Flagg, to cut the deficit to one, 4-3. Gadomski followed with a double to right-center, moving Figus to third. A passed ball allowed Figus to score, tying the game at four runs apiece. Senior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) delivered a clutch single to right field, bringing Gadomski in for the go-ahead run, as IWU took its first lead of the game, 5-4.

The Titans' offense continued to roll in the bottom of the sixth, adding six more runs to extend their lead to 11-4. Ford drew a walk to start the inning, and Wolfe reached base via a hit by pitch. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, setting the stage for Flagg, who lifted a sacrifice fly to score Ford and push the lead to 6-4. Hudik then singled to right field, driving in Wolfe.

With runners on first and second, Figus drew a walk to load the bases for Gadomski, who crushed a three-run home run deep over the left-field fence, extending the Green and White's lead to 10-4. A final run from Tomhave made it 11-4, putting the game out of reach for the Pioneers.

Illinois Wesleyan closed out the game with a quick three outs in the top of the ninth, securing the 11-4 win.

The Titans will be back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 2, when they travel to Millikin University for a 6 p.m. matchup at Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur, Ill.
