Softball Splits Opener at CMS

Kuhn drives in five on the day

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team split its season opener at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday, March 8, in its first of three days of competition in California. IWU (1-1) grabbed a 6-1 win in the opener to hand the Athenas (6-1) their first loss of the year, but CMS took game two, 5-4.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 6, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1
Senior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) put together a strong season debut, going 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, four RBIs, and a run scored. IWU finished with 10 hits to six by CMS, as six other Titans notched hits. Freshmen Bella Pinter (LaMoille, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) and Grace Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) registered the first hits of their careers in the win.

Junior Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) went the distance in the circle. She threw seven innings, allowing six hits and one run, with two strikeouts.

Sophomore Hailey Milgazo (Poway, Calif.-Poway) drew a one-out walk in the Green and White's first trip to the plate and moved to second on a groundout and third on a passed ball. With two outs, Kuhn stepped to the plate and smacked a double to right-center, scoring Milgazo.

A diving catch by Milgazo in left highlighted a 1-2-3 first from Certa as IWU led 1-0 after one inning.

Kuhn notched her second hit of the day in the fourth, poking a single up the middle with one out. Junior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) followed with a single through the right side, moving Kuhn to third. The Athenas fired from right field to third and then tried to catch Post moving second, but instead CMS airmailed a throw into the outfield that allowed Kuhn and Post to score, extending IWU's lead to 3-0.

The Titans upped their lead in the fifth with three runs on four hits. Wilkens broke the inning open with an infield single and junior Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) followed with a base knock. After Milgazo's walk loaded the bases, Kuhn cleared the bases with a double to the gap.

The Athenas broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fifth, cutting IWU's lead to five, 6-1.

Back-to-back singles by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the seventh made things interesting, but a quick snag and flip from Kuhn doubled the Athenas up to end the game.

Game Two: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5, Illinois Wesleyan 4

Illinois Wesleyan wasted no time taking control in game two, as the Titans pounced for four runs in the top of the first. IWU cranked out four hits in the frame, with Milgazo and junior Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) getting things started with back-to-back one-out singles. With two in scoring position after a double steal, Kuhn came through with a sacrifice fly to score Milgazo from third. Senior Ava Khoury (Colubmia, Ill.-Columbia) drove home Wissmiller with a double to center and Post walked to put runners on the corners with two outs. Freshman Julia Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) entered as a pinch runner and promptly swiped second with freshman Jillian Bollard (Roselle, Ill.-Saint Viator) at the dish. Bollard ripped a triple to the fence in left, pushing two across the plate, to extend IWU's lead to 4-0.

CMS responded with three runs in its half of the first. The Athenas loaded the bases with three one-out walks and used a two-out, three-run double to pull within one, 4-3.

The Athenas tacked on two in the third with a fielder's choice and a throwing error to claim a 5-4 lead into the fourth.

A pair of errors by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps gave IWU two on with nobody out in the sixth, but the Titans could not manufacturer a run as they fell, 5-4.

Junior Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) and sophomore Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) split time in the circle, with Gatchell taking the loss. Holland allowed two hits over five innings.

Illinois Wesleyan gets right back at it tomorrow, March 9, against Chapman University. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT.
