Holland’s Shutout Leads IWU to Split at Chapman

Titans wrap up spring break trip tomorrow, March 10

ORANGE, Calif. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team battled back to earn a split at Chapman University Sunday, March 9. After falling to the Panthers (9-2), 3-2, in game one, the Titans (2-2) recorded a 3-0 win in game two.

Game One: Chapman 3, Illinois Wesleyan 2
Freshman Maddie Pool (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton Warrenville South) put together a strong collegiate debut in game one. The rookie went the distance, striking out six. She allowed four hits over 6.0 innings of work with three runs allowed, two of which were earned.

Each team recorded four hits in the win, while both IWU and Chapman were credited with three errors apiece. The Titans' four hits came from four different players, while junior Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) and freshman Jillian Bollard (Roselle, Ill.-Saint Viator) tallied RBIs on sacrifice flies.

A leadoff single came around to score as Chapman cracked the scoreboard first, taking a 1-0 edge after one inning. The Panthers used a two-out single to right to drive in the game's first run before Pool stranded one with the first strikeout of her career.

Illinois Wesleyan knotted the game at one in the top of the fourth with some situational hitting. Junior Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) drew a walk to leadoff and sophomore Hailey Milgazo (Poway, Calif.-Poway) followed with a two-strike single down the left field line to put the first two batters aboard. Senior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) moved the runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, setting up Wismiller's sacrifice fly. A popup ended the threat with a run on third as the game was tied, 1-1, after three and a half innings of play.

The Panthers used back-to-back singles and an IWU error to plate two runs in the fifth, climbing back ahead, 3-1.

A triple by Beckman and a Chapman error gave the Green and White a great scoring opportunity in the sixth. WIth runners on second and third and one out, a strikeout and fly out ultimately thwarted the threat as CU's lead held into the Titans' final at bats.

After a 1-2-3 seventh in the circle by Pool that didn't see the ball leave the infield, freshman Bella Pinter (LaMoille, Ill.-Saint Bede Academy) ripped a one-out single to left. Junior Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) registered an infield single and pinch runner sophomore Margo Geary (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) scooted into third on an error as sophomore Annika Brown (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) stepped to the plate with runners on the corners. Brown reached via an error to extend the inning with Bollard digging into the batter's box in a pinch-hit opportunity. Taking full advantage, Bollard battled at the plate before lifting a fly ball to center, deep enough to bring home Geary from third. The sacrifice fly pulled IWU within one, 3-2, with two on base, but a fly ball was hauled in ending the Titan comeback attempt.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 3, Chapman 0
Sophomore Mallory Holland (Shelbyville, Ill.-Shelbyville) tossed a five-hit, complete-game shutout in the circle to power Illinois Wesleyan to a win in the second leg of the doubleheader. Holland struckout one and did not yield an extra-base hit. It marked the first complete game of her career as well as her first shutout.

The Titans were outhit in the contest, 5-4, but the offense was aided by four Panther errors. Kuhn and freshman Grace Wilkens (Bartlett, Ill.-Bartlett) notched two hits apiece in 2-for-3 showings. Kuhn drove in two, while Wilkens scored one of IWU's three runs.

The Green and White did all of its damage in the third inning, plating three runs on two hits and two errors. Wilkens opened the frame with an infield single and moved to second as Beckman reached on an error. Milgazo's sacrifice bunt put two in scoring position, where another Panther error brought in a run. Kuhn capped the scoring with a two-run double down the left field line as IWU carried a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third.

Chapman strung together a pair of hits to open the sixth, but Holland pitched out of the jam and stranded bases loaded to preserve Illinois Wesleyan's lead into the seventh.

The sophomore hurler slammed the door in the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning behind three groundouts to the left side to secure a split.

Illinois Wesleyan finishes out its spring break trip tomorrow, March 10, with games against Case Western Reserve University and Bethel University. IWU faces Case at 1 p.m. PT at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, before taking on Bethel at 3 p.m. PT.
