Illinois Wesleyan is coming off a weekend series with Washington University in St. Louis Saturday-Sunday March 1-2 where the Bears claimed the upper hand in the series (2-1). WashU won the first two games, 3-2 and 8-3, before the Titans came away with the 4-1 win in the last game.

In the final series game, the Green and White dominated with an 11-3 lead in hits. Senior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) led the way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate that included two runs scored and an RBI. Freshmen Ben Ford (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley) and Matt Hudik (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) notched two hits each, while senior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) topped the team with two RBIs.

Junior Jake Pullam (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) earned the win on the mound, pushing his record to 2-0 on the season. He went six innings with four strikeouts, while limiting the Bears to two hits. Sophomore Caleb Martinez (Wheeling, Ill.-Wheeling) and junior Luke Costello (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) threw scoreless innings in relief. Martinez tossed the seventh frame and Costello closed out the game with two hitless innings to earn the save.

In the Gene Cusic Classic, the Green and White will play five teams and six games. Starting on Sunday, March 9, IWU will take on Otterbein University, followed by a doubleheader March 10 against Baruch College. With a day break, the Titans will then face Haverford College March 12, Skidmore College March 13, and will round out the classic with Alfred State University March 14.

Out of all five teams, the Titans have only faced one in previous seasons. Otterbein and Illinois Wesleyan met back in 1989 where IWU took the win over OU, 7-5.

One team will be a friendly foe for assistant baseball coach Josh Laurie. Previously, Laurie played at Alfred State for four years on the team as well as coaching shortly after that for two. A three-year captain for the Pioneers, Laurie was a first team all-conference honoree in 2019, and appeared in 128 games over his four-year career, starting in 126.

Live stats will be available for all games and can be found on the IWUsports.com baseball schedule page. Only the Titans' doubleheader with Baruch will be available via live stream.
