Men’s Lacrosse Continues Program-Best Start with Win Over Wabash

Titans on six-game win streak

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team came away with its sixth win of the season after defeating Wabash College Wednesday night, March 1, in an 11-6 showing despite battling cold weather and blistering winds along with a temporary power outage. With the win, IWU continues its best start to a season in program history at 6-0 while Wabash dips to 3-2.

A trio of Titan fifth-years shared the team lead of three points with Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) and Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Cheyenne Mountain) both scoring three goals, while Bob Boone (Los Angeles, Calif.-Notre Dame) totaled two goals and an assist. Senior Nick Schroeder (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) led the team with six ground balls while going 11-for-16 at the X.

Continuing to showcase IWU's dominant defensive front was junior Billy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel), who recorded a team-leading five caused turnovers while adding five ground balls. Freshmen Carlo Adams (Knoxville, Tenn.-West) and Owen Miller (Brookfield, Wis.-Brookfield Central) also totaled five scoops in the contest.

As a team, IWU held the advantage in shots (58-27), shots on goal (24-13), ground balls (47-34), clears (19-14), faceoffs (12-8) and dominated in caused turnovers (19-9). Wabash held the advantage in saves with 13 while senior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) had seven saves on a .538 save percentage. Tervo was credited with his fifth win of the young season.

Black put the Titans on the board first, just 40 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal. Forcing a Little Giants turnover, Miller scooped up the ground ball before dishing to Eastburn for the 2-0 lead with 12:22 left in the first.

Wabash found its first goal of the game two minutes later. Senior Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) took a shot that ricocheted off the Wabash goalie's stick right back to Eastburn who buried it in the net for the 3-1 advantage. Thirty seconds later, Wabash cut the Titan lead back to one.

The IWU defense held Wabash scoreless in the second period but managed to up its lead to 5-2. Senior John Kittoe (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) juked his defender for an open goal with 7:09 left in the half before Boone bounced it in for an unassisted goal to extend the three-point lead before the break.

Boone used all of his 6-foot-6 stature to intercept a long pass at the midfield line and quickly found Weinberg posted up outside the crease to give IWU a four-point cushion. Wabash answered with a goal of its own to bring the score to 6-3.

Off the assist from junior Cole Kennedy (Walnut Creek, Calif. De La Salle), Eastburn completed his hat trick with a behind-the-back finesse shot, but Wabash cut the Titan lead back to three with 47 left to play in the third period.

Boone doubled up the score at 8-4 after beating his defender and sending one to the back of the net. Black ripped a wide open goal from the left wing for the 9-4 lead before Wabash answered with back-to-back goals. A pair of penalties on the Titans put IWU in a man-down situation but sophomore Jake Kahoun (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) would not be fazed as he scored despite being a man-down. With 3:23 left to play, Black put away the Titans' last goal of the game to claim the 11-6 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan is back on the road for a two-game stint in Colorado Springs, Colo. for its spring break trip. The Titans will face host school Colorado College Wednesday, March 12 at 6 p.m. MT before taking on Ursinus College Friday, March 14 at 12 p.m. MT.
