Men’s Lacrosse Sees First Loss of the Season at Colorado College

Titans back at Washburn Field for neutral site game with Ursinus, March 14

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team saw its unblemished six-game win streak snapped Wednesday, March 12, as the Titans fell 19-11 to Colorado College. IWU dips to 6-1 on the season while CC moves to 5-3.

CC led in most statistical categories including shots (63-46), extra-man goals (3-0), ground balls (49-33), faceoff wins (18-16), and caused turnovers (11-6). IWU was plagued by turnovers in its midweek clash (30-23) but the Green and White held the narrow advantage in saves with senior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) totaling 15 to the Tigers' 14.

Sophomore Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) and fifth-year Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) led the Titans with three points apiece as McHugh's three points all came by way of goals, while Black had two goals and an assist. Senior Nick Schroeder (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) had a team-leading six ground balls while going 15-for-26 at the X. Senior Nick Horrocks (Boulder, Colo.-Fairview) had a team-high two caused turnovers with two scoops.

Colorado College got off to a hot start converting the first five goals of the game. Fifth-year Bob Boone (Los Angeles, Calif.-Notre Dame) finally broke the stalemate with 7:20 left in the first period after skipping one off the turf to cut CC's lead to 5-1.

Utilizing quick passes off a Tiger turnover, Black had a one-on-one opportunity with the CC goalie but dumped it off to a trailing McHugh for the goal. Fifth-year Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Cheyenne Mountain) scored off the assist from junior Noah Dretzka (Delafield, Wis.-Kettle Moraine) but it was McHugh who swooped in with the diving goal, thanks to the setup from junior Cole Kennedy (Walnut Creek, Calif.-De La Salle), to cut the Tigers' lead to just two, 6-4.

Colorado College snagged a last second goal to carry a three-goal advantage into the second period.

Senior Jake Gisi (Wentzville, Mo.-Chaminade College Prep) fired a long-range goal, his first of the season, to kickoff the scoring in the second 15 minutes. Black ripped a low goal to cut the deficit to one, 7-6, but Colorado College would ultimately go on a six-goal run to lead 13-6 into the break.

McHugh, traditionally IWU's key distributor, secured a hat trick after battling through two defenders for an unassisted goal three minutes into the second half. CC managed another three-goal spree before junior Billy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) broke the Tigers' scoring run with a goal of his own. The Tigers tacked on one more before the third period's end with Dretzka capping off the quarter a goal.

The Titans were down 17-9 headed into the final 15 minutes. CC put away two more while IWU saw goals from sophomore Nate Pound (Thiensville, Wis.-Homestead) and Black, but ultimately dropped the contest 19-11.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to Washburn Field Friday, March 14, for a neutral site game with Ursinus College.
