Men’s Lacrosse Stumbles in Bout with Ursinus

Titans head back to the Midwest for tilt with Calvin

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team saw its second loss in as many days as the Titans fell 15-11 to Ursinus College Friday afternoon, March 14. With the loss, IWU dips to 6-2 on the season while Ursinus picks up its second win of the season to sit 2-4.

Ursinus held the advantage in shots (59-38), assists (7-6), ground balls (30-24), and faceoff wins (23-7). Nevertheless, IWU led in saves (17-11), clears (16-13), and caused turnovers (7-5).

Leading the way for the Titans was fifth-year Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) with four points off three goals and an assist, while fifth-year Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Cheyenne Mountain) and sophomore Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) had three points apiece. Eastburn's points all came by goals while McHugh had two assists and a goal. Junior Michael Rocco (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) led the team with five ground balls while going 7-for-16 at the X. Senior Sam Skelton (Portland, Ore.-Franklin) had a team-high two caused turnovers. In goal, senior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) totaled 17 saves through 60 minutes while posting a .531 save percentage.

Boone struck first with an unassisted goal just over a minute in but the Bears answered shortly thereafter.

Freshman Carlo Adams' (Knoxville, Tenn.-West) goal at the crease from McHugh regained the Titan lead before Black put away an unassisted goal just five minutes into the game. UC scored to cut the IWU lead to one, just before a clutch save by Tervo started a quick transition for IWU that resulted in Black ripping a low goal past the Bears' goalie, off the assist from junior Karsten Nordlie (Roscoe, Ill.-Hononegah Community), to go up 4-2.

A menace on either wing, Black went to work on the left side, utilizing a swim move to deliver another goal for the three-goal lead, 5-2. UC got two back in the last minute of the first period leaving IWU with just a one point advantage going into the second.

Off a deflected shot from Eastburn, McHugh landed the scoop-and-score for the 6-4 advantage but the Bears scored the next five goals to steal the lead and go up 9-6 before IWU managed to find another opportunity.

Eastburn disrupted the Bears' scoring run with a goal courtesy of a McHugh assist with under seven minutes to play in the third period. UC put another on the board shortly after to lead by three, 10-7.

Eastburn buried his third goal of the game thanks to the assist from John Kittoe (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) to bring IWU back within two with four minutes left in the third. UC picked up another before the end of the third to carry a 11-8 lead into the final 15 minutes.

Sophomore Jake Kahoun (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) got in on the scoring action to open the fourth period off the dish from Kittoe. Ursinus scored twice more before Skelton ripped a long-range goal as the Titans still trailed by three, 13-10.

IWU could not find another opportunity to score while the Bears managed two more goals to take down the Titans 15-11.

Illinois Wesleyan heads back to the Midwest for its next contest, Saturday, March 22 when the Titans take on Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Mich.
