Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Adrian

Titans open up CCIW play at home April 9 against North Central

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Stepping foot on Tucci Stadium for its first home game since March 5, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team won the battle against Adrian College, Saturday, March 29, in a 23-18 showing for its home crowd. The Titans move to 8-2 on the season while Adrian's record sits at 6-5.

Illinois Wesleyan held the statistical advantages in shots (74-51), ground balls (67-41), clears (23-19), faceoff wins (28-17), and caused turnovers (10-3). The Bulldogs led in saves (22-15), assists (14-9), and extra-man opportunities (4-3).

Nine Titans got in on the scoring action today with sophomore Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) leading the Green and White with eight points on a clean four goals and four assists while also racking up four ground balls and a caused turnover. Fifth-year Ike Eastburn (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Cheyenne Mountain), senior Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest), and junior Noah Dretzka (Delafield, Wis.-Kettle Moraine) tied for the second-most points for the Titans with four apiece. Eastburn notched four goals, while Weinberg had three with an assist, and Dretzka tallied two goals and two assists.

Senior Nick Schroeder (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) was good for a 22-for-32 showing at the X while accruing 14 ground balls. Junior Michael Rocco (Liberyville, Ill.-Libertyville) went 4-for-10 with two ground balls and freshman Jake Sline (Homewood, Ill.-Homewood-Flossmoor) went 2-for-3 with one ground ball. Junior Billy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) led the team with two caused turnovers while also adding a pair of goals and four scoops to his statline.

Senior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) extended his goalie record to 7-2 with today's win, as he totaled 17 saves through 59:30 minutes in goal. Senior Sam Scott (Worthington, Ohio, Thomas Worthington) relieved Tervo for the final stretch.

Illinois Wesleyan cracked the scoreboard first going up 2-0 with goals by Eastburn and sophomore Jake Kahoun (Worthington, Ohio, Thomas Worthington). Adrian battled back with a three goal run to take a 3-2 lead before T. McHugh found Weinberg for the tying goal with 5:25 left in the first period. Eastburn put away another one to take the lead just under a minute later.

A save by Tervo led to a quick series from B. McHugh, who received the ball ahead of the midline and took it all the way in for the Titans' fifth goal of the game. T. McHugh and fifth-year Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) worked each of their defenders for two unassisted goals to give IWU a four-point cushion heading into the next 15 minutes, 7-3.

A faceoff violation put the Green and White in an extra-man opportunity where Eastburn delivered the man-up goal off the assist from senior John Kittoe (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee). T. McHugh landed his second goal of the game, just before Dretzka shook loose Adrian's defender just 30 seconds later to lead 10-3.

Adrian would eventually go on a 3-1 scoring run through the next eight minutes. Strict defense by senior Tyler Crawford (Cary, Ill.-Prairie Ridge) forced a shot clock violation for the Bulldogs before Dretzka notched another goal to double up the score and take a 12-6 lead into the second half.

Out of the break, Adrian put away two goals to cut it to 12-8 in favor of IWU. With the ball in the stick of B. McHugh ahead of the midline, the junior sent his defender to the turf before breaking away for his second goal of the game. Adrian managed to get one back, but an unassisted goal by T. McHugh kept IWU ahead 14-9. The Titans and Bulldogs traded goals before Adrian landed two, cutting IWU's lead to three at 15-12. Senior Jake Gisi (Wentzville, Mo.-Chaminade College Prep) scored off the assist from Weinberg to lead 16-12, heading into the final 15 minutes.

Weinberg scored a man-up goal off the helper from T. McHugh to open the fourth quarter. Adrian net another before fifth-year Bob Boone (Los Angeles, Calif-Notre Dame) ripped a goal to keep a five-score lead. Adrian was good for a pair of goals but still trailed 18-15 with 10 minutes to go.

Unassisted goals by T. McHugh and Black put IWU ahead 20-15, but an IWU penalty gave up a man-up goal to the Bulldogs. T. McHugh sent helpers to Black and Boone 30 seconds apart for a 22-16 advantage. Weinberg would ultimately put away the Titans' final goal of the game off the assist from Boone, while Adrian took advantage of two more man-up goals to close out IWU's 23-18 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan will have a break in competition and will return to Tucci Stadium Wednesday, April 9 for a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin matchup with North Central College.
