Men’s Tennis Splits Day at Principia

Titans sweep Monmouth, narrowly fall to Principia

ELSAH, Ill. - Playing Monmouth College and Principia College in Elsah, Ill. Saturday, March 22, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team split its jam packed day of action. The Titans (4-7) swept Monmouth (0-6), 7-0, to begin their day, but fell in a heartbreaker to the Panthers (7-3), 4-3, to conclude the trip.

The Green and White began its day with a strong showing against the Fighting Scots, easily sweeping through doubles action to secure the one-point decision. Juniors Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Phillips Exeter) took a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles to kick off the match. Fifth-year Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) and sophomore Thad Dillow (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) won at the No. 2 doubles spot, 6-0. Also winning 6-0, junior Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) and sophomore Chase Tomecki (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) delivered the sweep at No. 3 doubles.

Playing in the top singles slot, Turnbull secured his second win of the day behind set score victories of 6-1, 6-3. Vigneri follows at No. 2 singles, winning with the same scores as his doubles partner. McCoy blew through his No. 3 singles competition, downing his opponent 6-0 in both sets. At No. 4 individuals, Dillow notched another victory, taking his sets 6-0, 6-2. Slotted at No. 5 singles, Hammond swept his opponent to take both of his sets, 6-0. Tomecki completed the sweep, locking in his win at No. 6 singles behind set scores of 6-2, 6-0. 

Principia 4, Illinois Wesleyan 3
IWU was not able to snag its second win of the day, as the Titans dropped a narrow battle with Principia, 4-3. 

The Titans could not secure the point allotted for the majority of the wins in the doubles portion of the contest, as IWU dropped the two bouts. A default gave the Green and White the No. 3 doubles win, sending Principia ahead, 1-0, heading into singles action. 

Illinois Wesleyan secured singles wins from Dillow, Hammond, and Tomecki, coming in the No. 4-6 spots, respectively. Dillow logged the win at No. 4 individuals, winning his sets 6-3, 6-2. Hammond followed with the win at No. 5 singles, as he took his sets 6-0, 6-2. Tomecki won by default at No. 6 singles to lock in the third point for the Titans. IWU was not able to snag another win, dropping the match, 4-3.

The Titans begin the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin portion of their schedule, beginning with a battle against Millikin University Saturday, March 29. IWU will host the Big Blue (7-2) at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Racquet Club.
