Baseball Splits with Wabash

Titans finish series with Little Giants tomorrow, March 23


CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - Totaling 21 hits on the day, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team split a pair of games with the Little Giants of Wabash College, Saturday, March 22. The Little Giants took the first game in a close 8-7 battle, but the Titans quickly turned it around to take the win in the second game, 11-4. Illinois Wesleyan now sits at an even 7-7 on the season, while Wabash moves to 8-6 after today. 

Game One: IWU 7, Wabash 8

Junior Cole Shamhart (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) took the mound for the Green and White, with relief from juniors Nathan Waterman (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South), Luke Costello (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South), and sophomore Caleb Martinez (Wheeling, Ill.-Wheeling). Shamhart pitched 5.1 innings, recording one strikeout. Waterman followed with 2.2 innings of work, racking up two strikeouts. Costello and Martinez split the ninth inning to close out the game, with the loss ultimately falling on Costello, who drops to 0-1 on the season.

At the plate, senior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) went 2-for-4, driving in three runs. Seniors Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove), Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg), and Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield), and sophomore John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) each recorded an RBI.

Illinois Wesleyan tallied nine hits and seven runs, including three doubles, six walks, and two stolen bases.

The Titans struck first in the top of the first inning, beginning with a single by leadoff hitter Figus. Gadomski, batting second, walked to push Figus to second. Tomhave reached base on a fielder's choice, loading the bases for Gurgone. Batting cleanup, Gurgone lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Figus to score and giving Illinois Wesleyan a 1-0 lead.

However, the Little Giants responded in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Titans fought back, adding a run to the scoreboard. Junior Gage Wolfe (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) led off with a walk, and with two outs, Gadomski smacked a double into right-center, driving in Wolfe and cutting the deficit to 3-2.
The Little Giants extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth with two more runs, pushing the score to 5-2 in favor of Wabash.

In the top of the seventh, IWU chipped away at the deficit, scoring two more runs to bring the score to 5-4 in favor of the home team. Wolfe started the rally with a hit to center field, then advanced to second on an error. Pinch hitter Matt Hudik (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) blasted a double to left field, putting Wolfe on third. With the top of the lineup back up to the plate, Figus hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Wolfe and making it 5-3. Gadomski walked again, placing him on first and Hudik on second. Tomhave followed with a single to the Wabash shortstop, bringing Hudik home and narrowing the gap to 5-4.

In the top of the ninth, IWU surged ahead with three more runs, taking an 8-5 lead. Despite the late rally, the Titans ultimately fell to the Little Giants 8-7 in the bottom of the ninth.

Game Two: IWU 11, Wabash 4 

Junior Will Davidsmeier (Virginia, Ill.-Bearstown) earned the win as the starting pitcher, improving his record to 1-2. He delivered a solid seven-inning performance, striking out three while allowing just three hits. Senior Brady Hartman (Milan, Ill.-Sherrard) came on in relief, pitching two innings and recording two strikeouts.

At the plate, senior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) went 3-for-4 as the designated hitter, leading the team with three RBIs, one run, and a double. Tomhave finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

As a team, Illinois Wesleyan racked up 12 hits and 11 runs, drawing eight walks and hitting two doubles. Wabash totaled six hits and four runs, with three doubles and a pair of walks.

The Titans and Little Giants both started the game with quick 1-2-3 innings, heading into the second inning tied. Wabash took an early lead in the bottom of the second, scoring the first run of the game to go up 1-0.

The Green and White responded in the top of the third, erupting for four runs to seize the lead. Sophomore Luca Morelli (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Adlai E. Stevenson) led off with a single up the middle. Hudik followed with a sacrifice bunt, advancing Morelli to second. At the top of the lineup, Figus ripped a hit into right field, sending Morelli to third. With Gadomski up next, the shortstop doubled to left-center, bringing Morelli home and moving Figus to third. Tomhave then hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Figus and advancing Gadomski to third, pushing IWU ahead, 2-1.

The Titans' offensive onslaught continued. Gurgone earned a walk, followed by Woltman, who singled up the middle, advancing Gurgone to third and bringing Gadomski home. Freshman Ben Ford (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley) followed with a single to left field, easily scoring Gurgone and extending the Titans' lead to 4-1.

IWU maintained its offensive momentum in the top of the fourth, adding four more runs to extend the score to 8-1. Morelli reached base after being hit by a pitch, and Hudik followed with a single to left field, advancing Morelli to second. Figus drew a walk to load the bases. Tomhave delivered a clutch single just past the third baseman, reaching first and bringing in another run for the visitors.

A new pitcher couldn't stop the Green and White as Gurgone walked, bringing Hudik in to score. Woltman came to the plate, hitting a double down the left-field line to drive in both Figus and Tomhave. Heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Titans led 8-1.

The Little Giants plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth, cutting into the Titans' lead, 8-3.

The Green and White added three more runs in the top of the sixth. Tomhave led off the inning with a walk, and Gurgone moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Tomhave then advanced to third on a wild pitch while Woltman worked a walk to put runners on the corners. Ford followed with a single to left, scoring Tomhave and putting Woltman on third in scoring position.

Wolfe then singled to left field, loading the bases with just one out. Morelli drew a walk to bring in another run, and Hudik followed with a walk of his own, pushing two more runs across the plate. The Titans now held a commanding 11-3 lead.

One more run for the Little Giants in the eighth finished the game score at 11-4 with the Titans taking the win. 

The two teams will end the series at Jack Horenberger Field Sunday, March 23. Tomorrow's game will see the first pitch move from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. due to weather conditions.
