Titans Drop Series Finale with Wabash

Titans Drop Series Finale with Wabash CCIW play up next

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team fell to Wabash College, 8-5, in the final game of a three-game series Sunday, March 23. With the loss, the Titans drop to 7-8 on the season, while the Little Giants improve to 9-6.

Junior Jake Pullam (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) started on the mound for IWU, pitching five innings with six strikeouts and three walks. The Titan bullpen featured senior Luke Schwab (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South), junior Jonathan Ciullo (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville), sophomore Caleb Martinez (Wheeling, Ill.-Wheeling), and freshman Michael Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central). Schwab threw 2.2 innings, recording two strikeouts, while Ciullo was the pitcher of record.

Offensively, junior Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and senior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) was 2-for-3, driving in two runs and scoring once.

Both teams finished with 10 hits, with IWU tallying a double and a home run as each team also recorded two extra-base hits. The Titans and Little Giants earned seven free passes apiece.

Wabash struck first in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead. The Little Giants added two more runs in the third to extend their advantage to 3-0.

The Titans responded in the bottom of the third with three runs of their own to tie the game at 3-3. Flagg began the rally with a single to left, followed by a sacrifice bunt from freshman Matt Hudik (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) to advance Flagg. Senior Justin Gadomski's (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) single to center brought Flagg home and pulled IWU within two, 3-1. Tomhave followed with a 397-foot home run to right-centeri to even the score.

A brief rain and hail delay, followed by a lightning delay, halted the game before action resumed in the fifth inning. Once teams returned to the field, Wabash reclaimed the lead with a run in the top of the fifth, putting the Titans behind 4-3 heading into the sixth inning.

Flagg once again ignited the offense in the seventh, reaching base with a single to right, stealing second, and advancing to third on another sacrifice bunt by Hudik. Senior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) drove Flagg home with a single to right, tying the game, 4-4. Gadomski singled to left, advancing Figus to second to put two on for Tomhave, who reached to load the bases. Wabash's pitcher issued a walk to senior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) pushing IWU ahead, 5-4.

After a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the eighth, IWU's lead remained, 5-4, into the final frame.

Walks piled up for the Green and White and a hit by pitch saw Wabash grab a 6-5 lead. The Little Giants added a two-run single to tack on a couple of insurance runs and carry an 8-5 advantage with the Titans down to their final at bats.

A one-out double by Swanson and a walk by Woltman brought the tying run to the plate, but a lineout thwarted the threat as the Green and White was upended, 8-5.

Illinois Wesleyan will open College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play at home Thursday, March 27, against North Park University. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Jack Horenberger Field in Bloomington, Ill.
