Men’s Tennis Gears Up for Saturday Duals at Principia College

Titans face Monmouth & Principia

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team will continue its season after a spring break trip down to Gulf Shores, Ala., with two matches at Principia College Saturday, March. 22. The Titans (3-6) will face Monmouth College before taking on the Panthers (5-3).

Illinois Wesleyan returns from Gulf Shores, where it saw the Titans go 1-2 on their trip. 

Juniors Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Phillips Exeter Academy) had a strong showing for the Green and White in the first contest against St. Thomas (Texas). The duo secured the win at No. 1 doubles to begin the match with a 6-2 victory. The other flights went in favor of the Celts, resulting in a one point decision for UST.

In the second matchup the Green and White were swept in doubles play to open the match against Belhaven University. The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team quickly responded with a strong showing in the singles portion garnering the top four spots. Securing the win in five of the six singles spots, leading to a 5-2 victory over the Blazers. Junior Sebastian Rasquin (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) secured his first collegiate win in the No. 6 singles slot. 

The final match in Gulf Shores saw a narrow defeat against UW-Superior 4-3. The duo of Turnbull and Vigneri captured the lone win for the Titans in doubles play. Vigneri stayed hot in singles play, as he garnered a win at No. 2 singles. Fifth-year Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) notched the win at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Thad Dillow (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) needed some extra time to secure the win at No. 4 individuals.

IWU will face Monmouth (0-3) for the ninth time in program history, a matchup that has seen the Titans win all nine matchups against the Scots. The Green and White won the most recent meeting, 9-0, Feb. 17, 2024. The Titans will conclude the day by taking on Principia for the seventh time in program history, a series that last saw Titans escape with a 5-4 win Feb 17, 2024.
