Baseball Surpasses Skidmore

IWU plays Alfred State, March 14

FORT MYERS, Fla. - With not a cloud in the sky, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team kept the lead the entire game against Skidmore College, March 13. The Titans outscored the Thoroughbreds, 5-3, bringing IWU's record to even at 5-5 and pushing SC to 3-3-1.

Illinois Wesleyan totaled 14 hits to Skidmore's seven, and recorded 27 putouts and six assists.
Senior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) went three-for-four on the day adding two runs and a walk. Fellow senior Casey Swanson (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka) went two-for-four, tallying two runs batted in, two runs, and one home run to his name.

Junior Jake Pullam (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) was the starting pitcher on the mound for the Titans and added to his win streak moving to 3-0 on the season. The Palatine, Ill. native pitched for five innings and totaled six strikeouts. Sophomore Caleb Martinez (Wheeling, Ill.-Wheeling) was the lone relief pitcher, totaling three strikeouts, and earning his first save of the season.

The Titans were the first to put numbers on the board scoring two in the top of the first. IWU's leadoff hitter, senior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove), started on base with a walk, leaning right into Gadomski's single to right field to put runners on first and second. With one out, senior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) singled through the left side to put the Titans in a two out and bases loaded situation. Senior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) stepped up to the plate and sent one up the middle to run Figus and Gadomski in for the 2-0 lead.

Neither team scored again until Swanson swung for the fences in the top of the third, to nab his second home run of the classic and the second of his career. The Green and White lead 3-0 going into the fourth inning.

The Thoroughbreads saw some success in the bottom of the fourth scoring two to keep IWU up, 3-2.

The bottom of the fifth saw more triumph for the Titans, scoring one more to lengthen the lead. Swanson started with a single up the middle before a sacrifice bunt from Woltman placed Swanson on second to put the Green and White one step closer to scoring position. Freshman Ben Ford (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley) took a swing and split the right and center fielders, giving Swanson ample time to run home as the Titans moved ahead 4-2.

The next two innings remained scoreless until Illinois Wesleyan was able to strike again in the bottom of the eighth. Starting with walks for Gadomski and Tomhave, Gurgone singled through the left side to put IWU into another bases loaded position. With Swanson up to bat, the Mokena, Ill. native hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to send Gadomski home, putting the Titans up 5-2.

Illinois Wesleyan was able to hold off the Thoroughbreads in the ninth to end the game at 5-2, in favor of the Green and White.

IWU will play its last game of the Gene Cusic Classic tomorrow, March 14, at 9 a.m. ET. The Titans will take on Alfred State at Terry Field, Field 4.
