Baseball Narrowly Falls to Alfred State

Titans eye first home game next Tuesday

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Playing its last game of the Gene Cusic Classic, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team fell to Alfred State College Friday, March 14. The Pioneers took the 5-4 win, bringing its record to 9-5, and dropping the Titans' overall record to 5-6.

Junior Cole Shamhart (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) was the starting pitcher on the mound, pitching for five innings and adding two strikeouts. Shamhart garnered the loss and is now 0-3 on the season. The Titans saw three relief pitchers in juniors Nathan Waterman (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downer Grove South), Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest), and Luke Costello (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downer Grove South). Each junior pitched one inning to finish out the game.

Senior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) went two-for-three on the game and tacked on a run batted in. Sophomore Jack Novak (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central), and seniors Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove), Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg), and William Duff (Western Springs, Ill.-St. Ignatuis) each scored a run.

The Green and White tallied eight hits on the day with one homerun and two stolen bases.

IWU was able to put numbers on the board before the Pioneers in the top of the first. Figus led off with a walk and quickly stole second to get him to scoring position. Fellow senior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.- St. Laurence) flew a ball out to far right field, giving Figus plenty of time to score the first run of the day.

Alfred State came out firing as well, scoring four in the bottom of the first, as the Pioneers took a  4-1 lead.

The bottom of the second saw no luck for either team but Shamhart and his Titan defence got a quick 1-2-3 to go into the top of the third.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when the Pioneers scored one more run going into the top of the sixth.

The Titans struck once again in the bottom of the seventh, seeing Gadomski hit a homerun to right center to tack on one more run for the Titans, with the score 5-2 in favor of the Pioneers.

IWU made a promising comeback in the top of the ninth but inevitably fell short at the end of the game. Pinch hitter Matt Hudik (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) took base, quickly followed by another pinch hitter sophomore John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest). Duff subbed in as a pinch runner for Ferraro with Tomhave up to bat. The Pittsfield, Ill. native slapped one into centerfield to bring Hudik home, as IWU closed in on the Pioneers at 5-3.

Gurgone took the box and was able to single to the left side, running Duff home to bring the score to 5-4 in favor of the Pioneers in the top of the ninth.

The Titans could not muster up another hit to end the game at 5-4, as Alfred State escaped with the win.

Illinois Wesleyan will play its first game at home Tuesday, March 18. Game time is set for 5 p.m. against Prinicipia College on Jack Horenberger Field.
